While Rei may not be a complete Yui clone, Yui is in fact a part of Rei. Just as a mother is a part of her child. The possibility of them becoming a couple is quite disturbing. In a way, I mostly envision their relationship as a brother/sister relationship. Besides, Shinji needs someone to shove a spine up his ass once in awhile. And Asuka is the only one who is going to do that for Shinji. Though I don't know much about the backrounds of all the characters, it would be quite a display if Shinji were to go out with a reincarnate of his mother. And though I have nothing personal against Rei, I can't help but feel unsupportive to this couple. Subject: incestincestincest! Second, Shinji loves Asuka (EoE, ep 10 "expansion" etc.) and Asuka loves Shinji. If Rei would even try to go out with Shinji, we would see her head ripped off in a thrash can and an angry Asuka walking away. Shinji kept Rei always as a friend and we had only few signs of him desiring to be more then a friend and after Asuka stepped in, Rei had no chances to get into the romantic stuff. I don't have anything against Rei, but I do hate to see people flashing "Shinji loves Rei more then Asuka" everywhere, because it's not true and it would be incest. So if you hate Asuka, you shouldn't start trying to convince the "brown-eyed-Asuka-in-EoE"-theory (Asuka, by the way, had blue eyes and whoever invented this theory must 1) be colourblind 2) have watched EoE on some crappy VHS 3) just frustrated of EoE's ending (Shinji and Asuka live and love)) or that Shinji loved Rei but was left with only Asuka.
