I don't know what more you could ask for in a DVD player.
Every output you can think of (except RGB), plays every title out there,
I haven't seen a pause at a layer switch yet. Supposedly they have some
system that doesn't need to move a lens to switch layers, which should
improve long-term reliability as well.
Video quality is sharp, and I didn't see any bit-crawl with either SVideo or
composite.
I got this one for $379 at Best Buy in Michigan.

DVD Player has a chip problem. Will not play newer dvd movies like Armageddon. Picutre freezes at critical point and cannot go forward or backward. I was lured by price- go with the Sony's and Panasonics. Paid $349.95 for machine. Price is not king.

It's a bit ugly, and the mechanism is a tad noisy for playing quiet music CDs on, but it's an all-region player with onboard Dolby Digital decoding, and that's what you buy it for. It works, and you're just not going to get better value for your money.

I think that for the money you can't get more. With it you can play any dvd in the world without any problem and very good quality playback.
The only thing i don't like very much is the 48 khz optical out, because we can't take the advantage of an of board 24 bit/96 khz dac.
The very best allrounder i've seen.

Samsung DVD-907 is one of the best I've ever seen.
With all the essential functions, the price is formed almost lowest, I think it is due to
low brand equity.
I am rating all A+, anf highly recommend to purchase this DVD.

Does not play some of the Video CD's but i have managed to change the Region code so i can watch region 1 and 2 movies..
If anyone know how to switch on other regions tell me...PLEASE

I have this DVD since July and has been more than expected. Superb image and audio and easy to use multiregion. The remote is also very good. By far the best DVD I have seen and not expensive at all !!!!

Got one (refurbished) as a free replacement for my screwed-up 905. Stopped playing most discs, so I sent it back 6 weeks ago. Now informed I am getting a brand new replacement after my warranty was extended. This is the 4th (or 5th ?) time I have sent out my player(s), so I'm keeping fingers crossed. When it worked, it worked well, none of the tracking glitches of the 905, with fine audio cd quality, certainly no complaints on DVD sound and picture. If it quits again, I'll go with Panasonic for dependability.

Terrible player. Buyer beware! My story is long, but interesting, and every word of it is true, so read on...

I received this player as a Christmas gift in 1998; it seemed alright, but as my DVD collection grew, I noticed more than a few movies with problems; someone mentioned Armageddon for one, but there were issues with Good Will Hunting, Lost In Space (no great loss; the movie stinks, but it came as a free giveaway with this player, for crying out loud!) a Bugs Life, and others. One other thing I noticed was that during preview and review modes, the disc would ignore your instructions when you hit the "play" button to continue the action, and would dump you about 15-30 seconds past your intended destination. Sometimes, it would even blank the screen and dump you forward to a point near the end of the picture (often over an hour from where you were) or back to the very beginning of the film. Not fun.

Then came "The Matrix" fiasco. The disc freezes at about 15 different points during the movie, and you have to hit stop and play again in order to get the playback working once more. Sometimes this has to be repeated 10 to 15 times to get past a few "rough" spots, which seem to be in every high-action point in the movie. Pixelation, bit-crawl, triple-repeats, you name it... this disc did it on my machine.

I thought I had a bad disc, since I've never had this much trouble before, so I loaned Matrix to a friend that had a Sony. He had no trouble whatsoever, so I called Samsung and when I got into the appropriate point in their voice mail, got a pre-recorded "If you're calling about the Matrix DVD, press one..." Naturally, I was a bit piqued, since these machines are supposed to be built around an industry standard.

The customer service rep explained that this was a known problem, and that Samsung had a fix for most of their machines (a company-wide design flaw, apparently!) but not for mine, of course. The company was trying to figure out whether replace the machines with newer models, or work up a chip replacement. My name went on a list and they promised to contact me when the time came.

Cut to several months later, and I'm informed that a chip is now available, and I just need to bring it into a local authorized service center, which I did after a few weeks due to my hectic schedule. By the time all this rolled around, it was a few weeks before Christmas 1999, and my one-year warranty period was just about to expire. Of course, I didn't have a receipt showing the exact purchase date because it was a gift, but the CSR I spoke to the second time around assured me that since it was obviously a defect, the chip upgrade would be handled on Samsung's bill, which I thought was very nice, at the time.

When I got my player back from the service center, there were still glitches on the Matrix DVD (well, they did say it was an improvement but not a guaranteed fix), many in brand new places. The disc still stuttered and glitched, but it never froze, and I was actually able to watch the whole film for the first time.

Unfortunately, the cost of being able to watch a slightly less molested Matrix was much higher than I anticipated.

In the past three months, nearly every disc I have bought or rented has glitched out, frozen, pixelated, or gone into what I call "extended stutter mode", which is where the picture and sound both get jerky, and once the condition begins, it doesn't stop until you turn the player off and try again. It has a multitude of problems on every singe dual-layered disc I have, including the Criterion Collection edition of Brazil, which I just received in the mail yesterday (can we say "last straw"?) I tried playing back a few scenes from this film, but nearly every scene on the second half of the main movie disc is completely unwatchable, freezing, stuttering, or dumping the poor viewer (me) back to the "Samsung DVD" screen in the middle. This happens 85-90% of the time and is so infuriating that I often have to curb the impule to smash the remote against the wall, rip the player out of my home theater, and toss it out the window... And trust me, as a pacifist this says a lot.

Of course, now the unit is out of warranty and this is causing even more headaches; of course now the organization denies it was ever a policy to replace the chips for free without proof of purchase and warranty status... the organization seems more interested in hunting down and crucifying the poor CSR that promised me a free upgrade than they are in actually helping me, but oh well.

Anyway, it appears that they may actually be replacing my 907 with an 839, whatever that is... I can't find it online anywhere, but I'll keep hunting down reviews. With luck, it'll be a better player, but I'm not very hopeful, and will never buy another product from Samsung as long as I live.

Had this been a purchase I initiated, rather than one done by my (now) ex-girlfriend, I would have stuck with my brand of choice, Sony, since I am the proud owner of a 27" TV, CD carousel, tuner, surround sound set, and two hi-end VCRs, all from Sony. I've never had a single problem with any of them with the exception of a TV problem that was my fault (I blew the single pin connector on the TV because I was pushing the set too far back in the entertainment center).

Anyway, thanks for reading my absurdly long story and STEER CLEAR OF THE DVD-907 AT ALL COSTS!

I've had this player since october of 98' and let me tell you.... everything that the guy above has said happened to me too! This player is not a very good one.... sure.. older movies play just fine...but even if you get the firmware upgrade the matrix still stutters, skips, and farts around in a few area... (yes about 15 different spots)!#@!$@!! I'm a pacifist also =) and I too wanted to rip the player out of my system... smash it to pieces... and urinate on the remains. Hopefully Samsung will get out a replacement to me also because this is simply rediculous!!! STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLAYER!!!! BUYER BEWARE! I'm going sony all the way next time... or panasonic... or toshiba... hell.. anything but SAMSUNG! ...you've been warned

Well, it's me again, the guy with the absurdly long story, with an update.

I've had an RMA for about six weeks now but haven't had the time to send in my player due to my schedule, but I'll be shipping it off before the end of this week.

The ordeal to get an RMA was absolutely ridiculous. I was calling continuously and had people denying they ever offered to replace my unit, telling me that I had to try the chip replacement two or three times before they'd consider it, and telling me that I was just plain out of luck because the unit was out of warranty.

I kept insisting that the request be bounced up to a manager and was pretty much refused... Until I in turn refused to take no for an answer.

I finally got approval when I made it completely clear that I was not going to go away. My first (and last) conversation with a manager was swift and decisive. I could return my player for a reconditioned model that had a limited warranty (although a new player might be sent in the event that a reconditioned model was not available).

The catch, of course, is that if you want your unit cross-shipped, you have to give a credit card number, and the $250 charge will be refunded when you send your bad unit back. I didn't opt for this; I don't trust Samsung at all.

So that's where we stand now. I'll be letting everyone know how it all worked out, but in the meantime, I wanted to let everyone out there with bad 907 players know that there is hope, as long as you're tenacious and refuse to go away. :-)

One last thing, before I go...

One thing I learned about this player in all my searching on the internet, is that there are rumblings about a class action lawsuit about the performance of Samsung first generation DVD players, and Samsung's refusal to assume responsibility for their error; it took me weeks of throwing tantrums to get them to even assume responsibility for their defect, and I think that this is intentional. For every person like me that refuses to give up, there are probably a hundred people like the guy that responded to my message that just gets pissed but walks away when he runs into a brick wall. They'll warn everyone off about the defects, but they won't dig in their heels and demand the kind of quality they thought their hard-earned money was buying.

Samsung probably considers this to be a "cost effective solution" to the problem.

The industry is apparently well aware of the situation, as well. In fact, as I understand it, most retailers like Best Buy and Circuit City absolutely REFUSE to sell Samsung DVD players now, and will not carry them in the future until Samsung takes care of the customers they've ripped off. Go to one of these stores and look... You'll see Sony, Toshiba, Pioneer, even Denon, Sharp and G.E., but you won't find a single Samsung player, even though they're well stocked with Samsung TVs, VCRs, and PCS phones.
