Sony DVP-S500D
In general, a great DVD player.
Excellent picture quality and sound.
Great replacement (?) for the much heralded DVP-S3000.

Sony DVP-S500D
Video is typically excellent Sony quality. This is a smaller player, which is nice, built more like Sony's single CD units. The built in DD decoder is the most configurable of any internal decoder. If you have only an AC3-ready receiver then this is the DVD player for you! I simply love it! Its like a small 3000 but a lot more user friendly and the remote is excellent - it controls most TVs and also controls audio input selection and volume on Sony receivers. I'd give it a 10 if it was made of the same bulletproof construction as the 7000 and had the cool door :)

Sony DVP-S500D
Excellent video and sound, decent remote, quiet operation. It played all the
DVD's I own flawlessly, with no problems on layer transitions on RSDL discs.
The chassis is quite a bit smaller compared to the S3000/S7000 - similar to
the lower end Sony CD players, although I actually prefer it this way from a cosmetic standpoint. Despite the rumours of lower build quality compared
to the S3000/S7000, I don't find any problems with the construction or
operation (ie, tray works fine, quiet operation, etc...).

Sony DVP-S500D
This is the top of the line DVD player for the rest of us. The 7000 is very nice but let look at the tale of the tape. The S500D can do everything the 7000 can plus it has extra A/V hookups for you multi-monitor fanatics. It has a killer remote. It has a cool built in DD decoder that is as good as any mid-range SONY DD reciever. The playback is flawless and despite what others may say the unit is built pretty good. What are you going to do, use it for a foot stool? And it's a second generation machine to boot. What are you waiting for? Oh probably because it's sold out everywhere. Paramount is IN! Come on FOX! The Force is with you.........

Sony DVP-S500D
This is an excellent DVD player that I've seen so far. It reads all my music CDs including CD-R. Accessing from the first chapter to the last one takes less than 2 Seconds whereas Panasonic-310 would fail to read CD-R disc and take much longer to move from one chapter to another. So far it functions very well without a glitch. It does sound better than a regular home CD player with the built-in 96khz/24bit decoder.

Sony DVP-S500D
I purchased the DVP-S500D, after looking at DVD players for over 6 Mos. The A/V guality is a 10+. I've had the S500 now for 2 weeks its played the 15 DVDs I have with no problems, plus all of the rentals. This players has loads of features, the features I liked over the other players are Component Video, Jog & Shuttle(foward & reverse[some players don't back up very well the S500 does])2 S-Video outs. When I played CDs I couldn't believe my ears again a 10+. The reason for the 9, would have been a 9.5, was there is no DTS output if DTS ever comes out on DVD it would be nice to be able to play them, but I chose the S500D because I felt it was a better player for the money. Of all the players I looked at the Pioneer DV-09 was the best, but the price was way to high.

Sony DVP-S500D
This is a decent player, but I'd rather buy the last S3000 left on the market, save $200, and buy a SDP-E800 Dolby digital decoder ($300 street price).
In this way, I can have 5.1 sound out of my Pioneer CLD99 - the top of the line laserdisc player.
Who cares the component output?
I couldn't see any difference between the Y/C and the component hook up,
even on Sony KV-35XBR48.

Sony DVP-S500D
Excellent picture, excellent sound, great features. Haven't had any problem with any DVD I've played. I was down to a choice between the DVP-S500D and DVP-S7000. With the features the DVP-S500D offered, I couldn't justify the extra expense for the DVP-S7000. The reason for the 9 is that there's no DTS and the remote control should have self illumination rather than the fluoresent keys.

Sony DVP-S500D
I purchased this player and owned it for two weeks before returning it. It seemed to be a nice player overall, and I have no real complaints other than it does not have a dts out. I was going back and forth between this player and the Panasonic DVD-A310 (which I ended up purchasing after returning the Sony). The main feature that Sony advertises that I thought made it worth not getting the Panasonic was the ability to do onboard adjustments of the AC-3 processor. (Other comments in this review page reference this as being the player to buy if you only have an AC-3 ready receiver which is what I have.) It should be noted that the Panasonic also has this feature, as well as the dts output. The only thing that I can say that I liked better on the Sony was the jog/shuttle on the remote. Other than that I think the Panasonic is a better buy (same list price, and same cost to the dealer that I bought them from).

Sony DVP-S500D
I'm not going to give this unit a numerical rating, but will instead say I decided against the Sony in favor of the Panasonic A310 because the S500D lacks the dts connections and has only the chrome or nickel-coated rear jacks, for which the Panasonic includes gold-plated ones for the same price. Overall, the quality of the Panasonic seems to suggest "top of the line," whereas with the Sony's, it appeared I had to go for the S7000 to achieve this level of quality, at least cosmetically. Admitedly, it's a close call between the Sony S500D and the Panasonic A310, however...one would probably have to live with both for a month or two before deciding for sure. And, since that luxury doesn't exist for me, I went with my first instincts.

Sony DVP-S500D
I have had the sony DVP-S500 for about a week now and it is very impressive video and audiowise. The only downfall is it's incompatibilty to pass through the DTS bitstream from DTS DVD's.

Sony DVP-S500D
I've had this player for three months, and the only thing stopping me from being completely satisfied is it's lack of a DTS out. I looked long and hard before picking it over the Panasonics that DID have this feature. The video and sound quality is everything I could hope for, and I really find the ergonomics superior. Now, a month getting used to a 110 or 310 might change my mind, but I easily preferred the quicker access and better-designed (in my opinion) controls of the Sony. I really want the DTS option, but here we are three months after my purchase (my deadline for trading in for another player), and I just can't justify trading it in for anything else on the market. I plan to just keep it and later purchase another player if DTS ever really gets its act together.

Sony DVP-S500D
I echo the above comments. Great player. High quality video. I use coax out so can't comment on built-in audio. Remote is very flexible and easy to use. On-screen menus are straightforward and functional. As with the above, the only thing not making me 100% satisfied is the lack of DTS capability - I think this is a major flaw but decide the dual discrete laser pickup was worth it. I gave up DTS and decided against the Panasonic A310 because it won't play CDR's - I'm in the process of archiving all my old VHS home movies to VideoCD (major flaw in the Panasonic BTW). Ability to use CDR media was an important factor for me.

Sony DVP-S500D
This is my first DVD player and I am very satisfied with it's performance. I have experienced no problems with any of the recently released DVDs. My collection is only about 30 discs to date. I have no in-depth exposure to other manufacturers DVD players. Before I purchased my player, I read everyones comments on the WEB concerning problems. I placed my money on Sony, since it was evident that it was the most reliable. Other players I considered were from Toshiba and Panasonic.
