Toshiba SD-2108
DTS stream output + component video output - what more do you want???! Also has pretty fast layer switching (about 3/5 second). Only complaints are: layout of remote control and it's not illuminated (hard to locate buttons at night). Have not noticed any problems at all with about 20 DVD's I've watched so far...

Toshiba SD-2108
A/V quality is wonderful. I suspect as good as any functioning player without direct comparisons.

Toshiba SD-2108
Video quality is very good, but the "glitches" from the first two generations of DVD players still exist. How could a company possibly keep missing these problems? They are less vivid on the -8 series players, but I find the problems distracting in a dark room.

May want to consider the A110 for less money and same features (except component output, in which case, get the A310)

Toshiba SD-2108
Great video quality - even with just the s-video connection. Haven't seen problems I've seen mentioned. Zoom feature is kind a neat.

Toshiba SD-2108
I have seen the "glitch" on two movies- Air Force One and Tin Cup.
It only consists of a split second flash of light on the bottom black
bar of the widescreen. Occured only once in the two hour movie. You can get
a free firmware upgradeto fix it from Toshiba if you want to send your player in. I bought it a week ago and it has been excellent. I had a hard time deciding between the A110 and the 2108. I felt that the glitches,
layer change problems and lockups on many recent titles reported by A110 owners
convinced me to get the Toshiba.

Toshiba SD-2108
I'm thinking of getting a 2108. It will be my 2nd player. I have a Panasonic A110 and have been fortunate enough to not experience any glitches on it yet. I would get another one but I've heard some good things about the 2108.

Toshiba SD-2108
Great picture like the SD 2107, but not as good looking - it looks like a CD player you'd get with a budget midi system. Bit rate meter, ColorStream out AND you can now zoom whilst paused - all things you didn't get with the 2107.
My player, however, exhibits a major flaw which everyone is discussing on the news groups - audio dropouts! Yep, the player loses the sound anywhere between once and ten times in a movie. It doesn't matter which film or where, it always does this on Dolby Digital 5.1 (I'm using a Yamaha DSP-A1). Be wary of buying the unit until you know Toshiba havbe rectified the fault - other than that - a great player.

Toshiba SD-2108
This is a nice unit with nice features. However, a couple of major problems bring this DVD player's rating way down for me.
First of all, Toshiba has confirmed that there is an intermittent audio glitch that occurs approx. every 20 hours in Dolby Digital mode with certain receivers / processors. Apparently, I am one of the lucky ones since the audio glitch that I am experiencing occurs far more frequently than every 20 hours. Toshiba will replace the unit with a refurbished unit with a chip upgrade for no cost but the shipping but it will take about 4 weeks from door to door. Toshiba says that units made after November will not have this problem, so I would make sure that you are getting one of these or look at another unit. Either way, not a nice "feature" for this unit.
Secondly, compared to the Sony units, the processing power of this thing sucks. What I don't understand is why Toshiba is in it's third generation and hasn't been able to start using 32-bit chips, like the Sony. Menu, scene access, and scanning mode seems to be far superior this way.
Toshiba makes a nice unit, but it can be slow sometimes and certain prone to "bugginess."

to xltadc1.adc.com:

what receiver where you using that caused the SD-2108 audio glitch? i spoke with Tshiba and that is the only bug on their list. They confirmed that it only happens with certain receivers though they didn't have a list of which ones.

The remote sucks and I don't see the use of Display feature where we change to 4:3, 4:3 letterbox, and 16:9. I didn't see this work at all.

Toshiba SD-2108
Would have rated it higher but this unit does not play CD-R audio discs, something that irks me as a vendor of CD-R audio discs =) Great video quality, have not experienced any audio dropouts with Dolby Digital - however, I havent yet sat through an entire movie (also this unit was made recently, so they've probably fixed it). Great remote, backlighting would be nice in 4th gen. My first standalone DVD player (previously owned Creative Labs DXR2) and overall I'm very happy. Does the 3108 play CD-R?

Toshiba SD-2108
I feel I can only comment as I have never owned any other DVD Player so I have nothing to compare it to.

I love mine bought in December 1998 in Australia. We purchased it on the basis that it was multiregion compatible from the Australian distributor via the flash rom chip, so it hasn't had a hardware mod (no voiding of warranty) I have used a combination of Region 4 and Region 1 titles with the player automattically switching without any problems so there is no "hidden codes" to punch in on the remote. It is also PAL/NTSC compatible and it will auto switch between these two as well, so the idea of just being able to throw ANY DVD into the player and it just working without any configuration was very attractive. The quality is unbeleivable even on our very average 48cm television that is nothing special, I can't wait till I buy a 68cm television with componant video as I am told the quality will improve even more (is it possible?!?) We can't watch The Fifth Element enough times :)

Toshiba SD-2108
The video quality on the unit is excellent but I have a Yamaha DSP-A3090 and have experienced the maddening audio dropout problem. Toshiba in Canada tells me that it will take them 15 minutes to fix the bug if I bring the unit in to their service centre in Markham, Ontario. Call 1-905-470-3500. According to what I've read, units manufactured after the end of November 1998 have no problems. I don't understand why a reputable manufacturer such as Toshiba would release an unit prior to thorough testing.

Toshiba SD-2108
Excellent bang for the buck, but the audio glitch is too much to handle. Toshiba has my receiver in for a chip upgrade to retify the audio dropout which occurs with all movies played back in multi-channel encoding at least once during the movie. I am running sony 825 receiver.

I got a 2108 in December. It is a great unit. I bought it because the DVD in my pc is a Toshiba and it works great. The remote could be better (small buttons and no lighting). I have a Toshiba TV and the remote is much better.

Toshiba SD-2108
The best DVD player out on the market, hands down. Only problem with system was a dropout problem regarding sound. This was an early problem and has since been fixed. If you do have a 2108 and are experienceing that problem, toshiba will fix it for free.

When you compare picture and sound quality for under $500, your choice is the 2108.
