Meade ETX-90EC
This scope is very nice optically (a 10), but the mount is a toy. Meade should upgrade this so it works better. I would have been happy to pay $100 to $150 more for something more refined and the scope would still have been a bargain.

I owned the ETX-90 for almost one month. I found the mount also toy like and realy unusable. The vibrations and movement were intolerable. Nice optics on a realy bad mount.

EXT 90/EC - a good unit optically, however this is overshadowed by major flaws. 1. The plastic base gives no support when mounted and vibrations at high magnification are intolerable. 2. The finder scope is totally unusable! Shame, could have been a good scope. Mine lasted 14 days.

Some people thing they got a deal at $600.00, but it no deal! For $600.00 I got a very good 90mm OTA & eyepiece mounted on a piece of junk. By the time you get though buying the accessories to make the scope usable, you have spent more than $1000.00 (90 conversion kits for finder, Polar Finder, Wedge, Tripod etc.). Why do you think there such a HUGE aftermarket of accessories just to make the scope usable without frustration. I have compared the optics to a Pronto, NO COMPARISON, the Tele Vue blew it away. Buy a Ranger, Up-Swing mount and a Bogan tripod and be happy

Suitable for double-stars and planets, but is very poor on DSO's. Optics star test very well. Almost toy-like base. Finder is useless; right angle conversion helps somewhat. A reflex-type finder helps alot. Autostar software is buggy, and as a result I haven't used it much. Database of 10,000 objects is laughable for a scope this size, especially the DSOs. Not recommended as a first scope. I've gotten alot more enjoyment out of my 9x36 Binos......

Optically this scope is decent but too slow which makes it difficult to locate anything. The mount is a joke. Too much plastic, not stable and the motor broke. Beginners should consider a Dob or a quality refractor to keep the frustration level down. The finder is a real pain. Dont't bother using it. Reflex finders are better. Telrads are too big.

I don't recommend this scope.

Always a crowd pleaser. Everywhere I go with this scope people only have good comments for it. I only have a few problems with it. The finderscope is of good quality but is located too close to the telescope. It also comes with a small tripod (if you can call it that) that has you placing it on tables and straining your neck. A standard field tripod is a must. Other than that the telescope performs exellently. Amazing optics, and when used with a 19mm Panoptic eyepiece has the sharpest images I have seen. Great choice for any kind of astronomer. Very portable.

The scope performs well on the star test...images are very clear, and optically, this is a fine instrument. The motor tracking is fair to average, and Meades Field Tripod is wobbly though stable enough for quick backyard views.

Mechanically, it is a bit cheesy....you never want to tighten the RA or DEC locks too much for fear of stripping the gears or breaking something is my general complaint. The Autostar works well, but you have to train and align scope carefully to get good results.

Overall, this is my portable that I use in my backyard close to downtown Portland, Oregon. There is no one good spot in my yard, so I have to move the scope around to different areas during the evening to view specific objects. Given the great portability of the instrument, it fits my needs. However, for dark skies I prefer my Intes MK-67.

The optical quality of the optical tube assembly is very good, with very good in-focus star images, although out of focus shows moderate undercorrection. It is optically far better than a meade 2121 10 inch that I owned. I would rate the OTA as a '9'.The mounting hardware, however, is a very different story. It has so many easily correctabe design flaws that I seriously question the intelligence of the design team. That's too bad, because there is a lot they did do well. I rate the mount a '5'. Meade also succumbs to a common affliction- by exagerating the magnification this scope can do. I find 250 power is the extreme upper limit. In the end though, its the optics that count, and Jupiter and its moons look simply beautiful, compared to my old SCT scope.

My first scope (now also have a LX200). Image is supurb no shift perfect star images. Not very bright dso are dificult to get but fun to use for most Messier objects. Motor tracking is so so gear backlash is a little frustrating.

For the money the scope is great, but it broke too many times. You basically have to be committed to repairing it frequently.

The scope was very good optically and performed well mechnically. The manual was average. I traded it in for the EC model and many times wished I had not, until I finally learned to maintain and fix the ETX/EC90 myself.

Optically, I rate it a 5/5
But crummy mechanics and a lousy finder adds only 1/5.
Buy it, and buy a new mount and a new finder.

Finderscope gave me a crick in the neck and the focuser is difficult to use at times. I wonder if the designers of this scope actually used it. Give me a 2.7" apo anyday... Oh yeah...and mine came with OTA mounted backwards, go figure.

Meade ETX-90EC
Fantastic optics, and the cheapest working go-to capability on the market. The mount is the weak point though, but for portability and visual use, one of the best 90mm scopes around. Not for astrophotography or extreme magnification viewing. With the Autostar, it also has built-in computer interface capability.

It's no Hubble, but then, no scope here is. Optically, it compares very favorably to the 90mm Questar.
