Yamaha DSP A-1
Best Amp I've ever owned.
Started with AVX-700, then DSP 2070, then DSP 3090, now DSP-A1.
The sound is effortless and it's ability to fill the room with sound is
awesome. I have yet to hear anything that is even close.

Yamaha DSP A-1
I went to the dealers to get a demo of a Panasonic DVD A350 and it "happened" to be running through one of these ... 2 hours and £2,300 lighter I staggered from the shop with both!

I didn't go looking for it, I didn't want it, I didn't need it ... until I heard it!

I *lust* for a Meridian 565 (and the associated digital speakers) and I will get one (or it's replacement) someday ... until then I am confident that this amp will last me. Forget the specs ... forget the "music" DSP modes (I don't like 'em on *any* systems I've heard) ... turn off the lights ... fire up the projector and prepare to lose the evening.

You will love it ... your partner will hate it! It's 23kg and is a huge black monolith to technology but it sounds wonderful. I have not heard an integrated AV amp that sounds this good ... sure, for musicality you can buy better 2 channel stereo amps for cheaper but musicality is not what the A1 is about ... it's about movies and having fun.

Nail down anything that can move because it will move ... yes you seem to have to crank the volume high but that's because it doesn't bottle out at half volume! Sit back and watch movies again just to hear how damn good they sound ... I promise you you'll be playing it louder and louder and the grin on your face will just get wider!

Downsides? Yup ... someone in the EEC decided that banana plugs are dangerous and so the Euro-A1 has binding posts only but that doesn't stop the thing still kicking arse! (Hell, I even like the remote!)

Go and audition one ... and I can guarantee you'll want one! (I.M.H.O)

Power to wake the dead and the only reason I didn't give it a ten score is that if I had then why would I want to get the Meridian?

An absolute winner! I have heard enough integrated surround amplifiers/receivers to know that the Yamaha DSP-A1 is something special! Previously I owned a DENON AVC-3800 (same as AVR-3600 but with no in-built tuner) surround amplifier and I thought that was good until the Yammy came along! Once fired-up on my system, the YAMAHA left the DENON in the dust! The first thing I noticed was the almost effortless power from the integrated amps! - certainly an improvement over the DENON and dare I say the DSPA-3090! And the DTS/DOLBY DIGITAL processing?.....WOW! Furthermore, I have tried the DSP-A1 as a stand-alone processor with several different power amps from brands such as Bryston, Parasound and Denon and I was absolutely blown away with the processing! The Yammy just sounds so clean and precise! I am currently running my DSP-A1 with an ENERGY RVS surround speaker system and this combination is truly potent!

I just purchased dsp-a1 and WOW! 7-channel was very unique and original but sounds oustanding, like listening from different kinds of recievers done by different programs especially sci-fi mode.More reserved power, very versatile with dts-built-in decoder and six-channel input.I'm gonna tell something that really impressed me about this unit, I experimented to connect two side speakers (just like 7-logic of Lexicon dc-1)by mixing front effect with rear effect outputs and plugged-in to the auxilliary of my old mini-component,finally adjusting delay time of front effects on dsp-a1..... astounding, stunning, more widened, smoother panning, total separation.

Yamaha DSP A-1
Well to start..this is a huge wee beastie!! The change in sound from the Pionerr VSA-E06 is very notable, were-as the EO6 required the volume turned up quite far (2 oclock Pos) the A1 feeds out brilliant sound at only 11 oclock...although my one down point is that my machine is faulty :(

When setting the LFE in DD if I set it to Main..brilliant bass (Speakers also connected to 2xQ50's , if I set it to .1 out on the A1 I need to crank up the output from the subs to such an extent that it booms with music...if I set it to "Both" I loose all bass. This isn't a phasing problem on my part as testing it in various setups..it fails all the time..so hopefully the replacement shall make me feel better, which I'm getting with absolutly nae hassle.

Also I find the setup a bit more sparse as compared to the THX EO6 with no requests for distance/time delay for initial setup. IT works fine, but I like to be able to relate my speaker placement to the correct delays etc..

Anyway..Excellent Amp and have no hestitation in applying a 10 to it even though mine isn't complete.

Listened to several receivers including Denon, Onkyo, Pioneer Elite, B&K. Bought the DSP-A1 because of the superior sound in both DPL and DD. The addition of DTS is great. Plenty of power. The 7 channel setup is GREAT! Plenty of inputs. The DTS demo DVDs are great if you can get your hands on one from DTS.

The DSP-A1 blew away my THX certified Pioneer Elite 07 receiver. Dynamic range
is huge with no clipping at high DB levels. A terrific bargain!

Yamaha DSP A-1
I thought I posted this yesterday, but see other posts for Sep 2, and assume mine did not make it for whatever reason. I want to make my comments from a new perspective...the older purchaser. I am 56 and replacing a lot of high-end equipment purchased between 10 and 15 years ago (including the Yamaha original DSP-1...no..not the DSP-1A, but the DSP-1! The fact is that many of the ideas, features etc did not exist ten years ago...including AC-3, DTS...etc. As far as I know back then, no amp (receiver), whatever made adjustments through a screen or display though tiered menus. Virtually all controls where through external knobs, switches or buttons on which the settings appeared in print. I am not arguing which is better,or for a return to the "good old days"...but pointing out that many of the purchasers of expensive high end equipment are logically older folks who are replacing older units and who have the greater disposeable income to afford it.
Then comes the shock of something like the DSP-1A (which I asumed would operate like the DSP-1)...not even REMOTELY close! The manual from the start immerses the reader into six or seven different systems (AC-3, Pro-Logic, DT and so-on) with not more than a brush-stroke! The need for, and the use of tests (largely through the remote) are sketchy at best...poorly explained...and arcane at worst. Try explaining topic #3 on page 37 (Dolby Surround Test...adjustment of output level) to a group of PhD level acoustical/electrical engineers...I am certain you would still get a lot of "huh's". Things never seem to quite operate as described in the manual (particularly with references to the remote), and I always resort to trial and error (try stopping the sequence of test tones by "pressing the cursor - or + button"...no deal.
At any rate...I love the DSP-1A, but hate the instruction manual...which for us oldies (who maybe missed the intervening developmental) leaves us (or me, anyway) in the dark. There simply is not enough step-by-step instruction in terms of how to operate the instrument and control it.
I welcome comments...even flames about my observations

Yamaha DSP A-1
Great sounding home theatre unit. I have had several systems and this is the best sounding ht amp out of the lot. I did alot of auditioning to purchase this amp and nothing compared in it's price range. You would have to spend big dollars to get a system to sound as good as this and have as much functionality as the A1.

Well done Yamaha!

* got an A1 from 'Top End HiFi', Wollongong, Australia in the middle of a shipping dock dispute. Pretty happy about it! Most people had to wait for the docks to start back up.

I had a DSP-A3090 and traded it for a DSP-A1 with a minimal exchange. I love it! DD is fantastic and while I have only Jurassic Park DTS on laserdisc, I think DTS has a future in Home Theatre. I am very impressed with the way Yamaha has incorporated the extra digital format, almost seamless, just a quick burst of noise before it decodes the DTS data stream. All the visitors to my home are just BLOWN AWAY!!

I just ordered a DSP-A1. I am getting Paradigm speakers. Should I get dipoles for the rear, or monopoles? Yamaha says to get monpoles, Paradigm says to use dipoles?

Yamaha DSP A-1
I bought this unit about 2 weeks ago, and I am so damn happy. I had to carry this big box into my trunk. I opened it up and I was just amazed. I had a Yamaha RX-V2092 so I didn't have to add speakers or anything or change anything (Except I had to lower the Entertainment Centers Shelf). Just for kicks, the 2 extra channels are derived from the soundtrack. Yamaha's DSP Modes use 3 channels for ambience, reverb, and reflections, the Center Surround Left and Right. The 7-Channel Option derives certain information from the Front Left and Right and adds reverb, ambience, and reflections and adds it to the front effects. Also I haven't gotten a chance to read all the submitions so I don't know if someone already said this.

Dolby Digital uses a higher compression rate than DTS. DTS uses more information space. The DVD Audio Standard is 96-khz with either 20 or 24-bit Decoders. SPDIF Outputs prevent from full 96-khz outputs getting out and it downsamples them to 48-khz. Crystal Labs is working on and may be finished with a 96-khz output. The only current known receivers whose DAC can't handle 96-khz is Sony STR-DE915, Pioneer VSX-D607S, Pioneer VSX-D906S, and Pioneer VSX-07TX. Now since Dolby Digital uses all the information for its soundtrack, than how will DTS fit since it still requires a DD 2.0 (PCM Stereo) soundtrack. So instead of having the format recorded in 96-khz they chose to have it recorded in 48-khz. This gives twice the space and noone can tell the difference. It will be totally inaudible (and scientific tests have proved it).

Yamaha DSP A-1
Ok people, let me just tell you that the DSP A1 is still the bomb !!!
However, I picked up a Yamaha RXV 2095 for evaluation and it is awesome !!!
It is basically an updated version of the RXV 2092. It also has a smoother and more refined sounding DSP
processor and Dolby Digital performance,
It has DTS and 6 channel inputs.
It is an absolute steal at $1249 shipped to your door with a 2 year warranty !!!
IT just goes to show you that as each year passes, electronics continually become a better value/dollar for the
consumer.
What the heck will Yamaha think of next?

This is the best HT integrated amp or receiver I have ever owned. I love the ability to hook up stereo subs. Up to three subwoofers can be connected (left, right, plus mono). The main and centers channels have pre-outs and main ins. All channels have pre-outs. Nothing comes close to the versatility of the A1. If you are looking for DPL, DD, and DTS in one unit, look no further than the Yamaha DSP-A1.
