Yamaha DSP A-1
Very nice, high quality unit. Clean menuing system. Buku s-video/audio inputs, more than any other receiver/integrated amp I've looked at. Has DD plus DTS plus 6 channel pre inputs/outputs. On screen menuing is straightforward and remove is actually pretty nice and very easy to use once you use it (I thought it was wierd when I looked at it in the store but have changed that opinion now even though I use a RC-2000 MKII now). Audio quality is wonderful. Has equalizer for center channel, has test mode where you can set the freq. of the test tone or use pink noise. I tried out a Denon 3200 and a Marantz 780 prior to this and took both back. Absolutely a great unit. Only drawback is the price. You have to want this baby - I did. If you want a receiver that will cost you $200 more.

Yamaha DSP A-1
Upgraded to the DSP-A1 from my old Technics DPL set up. Auditioned the Denon A1 and a Pioneer DD amp (not sure of model).

Of the 3 I listened to I thought the Yamaha sounded the best, and once I got it home and wired up the speakers (4 x B&W CDM7SE, 1 x B&W CDMCSE, 1 x REL Q100E), and fired it up with a DVD, I was (and continue to be) stunned.

I've not yet managed to turn the volume up past the half-way mark, before the volume became too painful. Absolutely clear, but too loud!

The DSP modes don't get much use, although the party mode (where the rear speakers duplicate the fronts) is good, and gets used when we have a party -- the rear speakers get moved into the dining room next door.

I was a bit unhappy there were no provisions for banana plugs, but I understand this is an EEC restriction, so nothing to be done there.

Commenting on the 96 kz play with the DSP-A1. As stated in previous comments, the DSP-A1 can only accept up to 48 kz on a digital input. This means you can buy a DVD player with 96kz/24 bit reading, but it must have
48 kz out. The Panasonics and yamaha DVD players will do this, not
the sony's (they have 96 kz out). I don't know if Pioneer does this. It was explained to me that ALL digital signals including Dolby Digital as well as DTS are output at 48 kz, which is good news for DSP-A1 owners.

Disregard the above comment that someone wrote. They do not have a clue on what they are talking about.
PCM cannot output anything higher than 48KHz 16bit due to copy right laws. There hasn't been a new idustry standard set yet.
Any cd player that has 96 KHz 24 bit D/A's can only output this through the analog outputs. The Yamaha will accept a 96KHz 24 bit signal but it will downconvert it to 48KHz 24 bit.
DTS and Dolby digital movies will be in 48KHz 20 bit. That is a standard as of now.

This is not an issue to worry about.

Excellent build quality. Excellent sound. Better for movies than music. Can't use banana plugs though! Of course it's too much money and I don't care what color it is. Nice to have DTS and DD in one box. When the price comes down on this (say $300 to $500), it'll be a fair deal.

Yamaha DSP A-1
I thought my Harman/Kardon AVR85 was good until I replaced it with this monster. With the H/K, you have to sit in a position of equal distance to the speakers for optimal listening, but with the DSP-A1 the sound is so full and rich, it almost doesn't matter where you sit!

There is no distortion or clipping at high volume, it has much better and fuller bass then my H/K, tons of inputs, many many setup features, and a decent remote. The sound is just too amazing to describe!

The only downside is that using any of the DSP modes (except for the standard Dolby Prologic and Dolby Digital Surround modes) adds clearly audible "static" when the volume is above -20 db. If you don't use the fancy DSP modes, there is only a whisper of noise when you crank the beast to 0db!

I bought the Yamaha DSP A1 last week. Before that, I have a Pioneer VXS-D702S ProLogic receiver and I treat it as a tuner now.

Quite happy with its music audio quality, powerful but soft enough to let you sit down and enjoy your music. For some people, the output from its DAC may be too soft, softer than that of Sony DVP-S7000 and MDS-JA30ES, but it's OK for me.

As my S7000 has no DTS output, I can only enjoy DD now. (I may consider to buy another one like the DV-S9.) The output from the DSP A1 DD decoder is detail enough not to miss anything.

Also, the impedance selection of my DSP A1 is automatic, contrast to some export version which needs manual operation.

However, there are several things which I do not like:
1. There is no speaker B option.
2. There is no tone bypass switch, although the Yamaha international web site says it does. (Maybe because my DSP-A1 is the original Japanese version.)
3. The most make-me-sad thing is the remote control. Although it can be programmed, the pre-defined functions for MD/TAPE1, CD and TUNER cannot be re-programmed. And its area A/B/C selection just makes me crazy. The remote control of my VSX-D702S does much better than this.
4. The REC-OUT selection is a bit too intelligence. All video source redirected to VCR1 and all CD source redirected to MD/TAPE1. Logical? Yes. But if I want to record my CD music played by the DVD player to the MD deck? The REC-OUT selector is of no use. I must select the DVD as the input source and listen to it in order to record it.
5. One last thing, the on-screen display of DSP-A1 can definitely be designed with a better user interface. And now, just like playing APPLE II many years ago.

Still, it worths my HK$11,000.

Yamaha DSP A-1
I tried a AVR-3200,3600 and a Marantz 870 before taking them both back and getting the A1 after hearing it in the showroom. I'm very pleased! Clean, crisp sound (even better than the 870) on my Energy A5+2's. Great flexibility for different speaker configurations and directing LFE/Bass. I was skeptical about the DSP modes but now I use them even for music - they add so much depth. Bookoo I/O, all with S-Video and optical. Background recording while listening to a different source is great. The control looks funky but is actually ok.

Where Yamaha could do better: 1. Brighter display (it's very dim in daytime even at maximum brightness, manual test mode (it automatically advances from speaker to speaker every 2 seconds - a pain!), clean up the level control interface (this is related the the test mode problem - trust me it's inconvenient), redesign the remote to be a more convenient formfactor.

BTW - I liked the Marantz remote (RC2000mkII) so much I kept it and use it with the Yamaha.

Overall, I'm extremely pleased even considering the price. It didn't get a 10 because of the above reasons.

I upgraded from a Yamaha 2092 to the DSP-A1. I am totally happy with my decision. It was definately worth the extra expense. The sound quality is superb, as is the build quality.I love the DSP modes for movies, and DTS CD's are incredible. The DSP-A1 in gold with wood side panels is drop dead gorgeous.
I love my Yamaha DSP-A1!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love the fact that I won't have to "upgrade" again anytime soon, thanks to the inputs for future decoders that may come along.

I use the DPS-A1 in combination with 4x B&W 604 and the B&W Mark II center + the ASW2000 subwoofer from B&W

As front effects I use simple solids

THE SOUND IS TERRIFIC in comparison to my previous onkyo 838 (which I thought was superb)

Yamaha DSP A-1
After months of comparing the available receivers such as Denon 3600/5600, Pioneer Elite 07/09 TX, Onkyo 939, and B&K avr 101/202, I purchased the Yamaha DSP-A1. The mids and highs are very clear and distinct. Dialog is crisp and clear. The A1 handles dynamics of music and movie soundtracks with ease. Bass is very tight. The Yamaha has a very warm and natural sound. Continuous power into 8 ohms is 110 watts/channel. Dynamic power is great.

Dolby Digital and DTS are great. Nothing comes close to the versatility of the A1. Up to three subwoofers can be connected (left, right, plus mono). The main and centers channels have pre-outs and main ins. All channels have pre-outs. Inputs are plentiful. The normal Dolby Digital and DTS modes are great and some of the DSP modes can be useful with some experimentation.

I have listened to the DSP-A1 side by side to Pioneer Elite and B&K. Unfortunately, I could not do side by side to the others. I do not think you can find a better receiver or integrated amp that can match the sound and verstility of the Yamaha DSP-A1.

The amount of power this unit has amazes me. The sound quality impressed me from the beginning and continues to impress me. Very natural and warm sounding. Only gets better as unit breaks in. No distortion and audio is very clear. Dolby Digital and DTS are amazing. I love the ability to hook up stereo subs. Plenty of inputs including S-video. Even has six channel input for whatever may come along next. An earlier review said the tones when speaker balancing moved from speaker to speaker for only 2 seconds with no manual override is UNTRUE. Press + or - key to temporarily halt tone. You can even generate low frequency tones to speakers to determine bass response by speaker in room. I would recommend this unit to anyone looking for Dolby Digital and DTS in one box.

I have the unit for 3 months now (bought it in Sydney, AUstralia), it performs beyond my expectations. Very good audio quality. I managed to crank up the volume without getting disstortion/clipping.

It lacks the AM/FM tuner.

Cheers,
Johan

I bought my DSP-A1 as a replacement for my Yamaha decoder-amp and Harman Kardon amp because I needed more power and wanted Dolby Digital. I love this unit, especially the DD part I use with DVD and LD.

This is the best HT integrated amp or receiver I have ever owned. Yamaha gives you so many inputs in the DSP-A1 that it is a great deterent to obsolescence. There is just so much it can do, and it does it so well. I love the DSP sound fields. Some audiophiliacs may feel that it muddies up the sound and gets away from the intent of the artist/producer. I can have pure sound as they intended; I just have dozens of more options as well! The remote is amazing. It took some time to understand, but now I can turn on my whole system, tv, and disk player, set the correct sound field, and begin the dvd or laser disk with just ONE push of a button. This amp rocks!

The Yamaha DSP-A1 blows the competition away. Oh wait there is non in it's category because all other *brands* rate their crap at 6ohm loads at 1kHz into 5 channels. It's so funny how the other manufacturers try and get their stats up but as in the case of the Elites and all the other crap out there they don't even compare. Attention manufactuters rate at 8ohm 20Hz-20kHz x 5 channesl non of this lame excuse for an am. WTF runs at 6ohm anyways. Jeesh. Oh yeah I own the DSP-A1 and the yamaha DVP-S700 and it rox. The new DTS Demo Disc #3 is totally awesome. If you can get your hands on one DO IT!
