This should be a great player, but you just can't vote on something that doesn't exist yet. I own the S500D and think it's wonderful, and the C600D should be the same player in a carousel format. But it definitely will not have a DTS out, and it isn't available yet--so all votes to this point should be stricken.

Does anyone have this unit? I have read a few different posts that the most recent units off the manufacturing line are passing a DTS signal properly to an amp that can decode it. Anyone tried this yet?

Sony DVP-C600D
-superior audio quality (especially after watching the Earth, Wind & Fire concert DVD)
-the individual speaker set-up is very useful (customizes the sound output to the room's size)
-jog shuttle requires some time to get used to but after that it's awsome

Sony DVP-C600D
I was at first very eager to replace my laserdisk player with the new technology of DVD, yet after purchasing Sony's 5 Disc DVD changer DVP-C600D, I'm beginning to have second thoughts. Instead of explaining my reasons as to why DVD is overstated, I'll simply explain the problems I ran into with this DVD player. First off and most irritating was the problem I encountered when I connected my new DVD player to my television. Since my television (Panasonic CPT-20568) does not have either component inputs of SVideo inputs, I had to connected it using the composite method. For some reason that I still cannot find an answer to, the brightness of the picture increases and decreases by itself enough so that it is noticeable to the viewer (which is incredibly disruptive). Secondly, I'm also starting to suspect that the audio on DVDs plays back extremely low. I asume this when I played a movie that I have both on videotape and DVD at the same time and toggled between the two. The videotape version actually sounded louder and better while the DVD version sounded considerable lower. Another problem I encounted with this specific Sony player was the shuttle/jog feature... very confusing and not very advantageous at all. Also, this particular Sony DVD player has way too many special features that a person should need or want. If one wants access to a feature, they must go through a tedious 5 page menu to find the specific one that they want.

Overall, I am beginning to think it would be best for me to return this DVD player and just stick with my laserdisks instead. I honestly believe this DVD format is over-hyped and still have some major flaws which restricts it from being called the "next generation in home entertainment".

Please respond if you wish... rsilenceprd@earthlink.net

The previous response is by someone who doesn't want to admit that DVD kicks the shit out of LD. The dope doesn't even know that the reference level for Dolby Digital is at least 4 db below that of Dolby Pro Logic. That's why his tapes sound louder than his DVDs. How do you buy a DVD player and expect to be blown away by the image if you use an old TV without even S video? Give me a break. I bet his LD looked great too huh? Sheesh. I have an A110 and am waiting delivery of a Sony C600D tomorrow as a matter a fact. Will post some time next week after I've had a chance to test it.

This unit plays DVD movies very well, and the CDs that it can play sound great. But even though it has dual discreet pickups, it can NOT play music CD-Rs, and it even has problems with some commercial CDs. The lack of support for CD-Rs is not mentioned any place in the specs or anywhere in the manual, and it is surprising for such a recent model. I have 3 other CD players, one that is over 7 years old, and all of them can play CD-Rs. Just a warning to anyone thinking of buying this expensive unit.

I really like this player. I got it as a birthday present. It's my second DVD player. My first is an A110. Picture quality is identical. The build quality is real good. CD sound is excellent and it has component video outputs. I wish it had DTS. I paid $599 from www.computability.com. Very good remote control. It has glow in the dark keys. I recommend this player highly.

The unit I got for 599 for computability plus picked up 5 free DVD's from
Netflix as part of the offer. This unit provides top quality performance in a great package. The unit DOES have Component out (CYK) as well as SVHS and standard RCA out plus dolby digital (but no DTS decoding). The Unit DOES play CD-R's I make with my HP 7200 surestore cd writer on generic blanks. It is a great way to archive your favorite shows for later viewing (PBS specials) and the like. Definitely recommend it if you are making your own video CD's.

CD-R Answer

According to the May 1999 Sound & Vision Magazine, none of the Sony DVD Players play CD-R Discs. I tried a CD-R at a local Best Buy and the only sony to read it was the C600D. But the official stance is - not supported.
BTW - the Pioneer DV414 does play CD-Rs. I'm buying one of those.

As you can tell, CD-R compatibility is VERY important to me.

These people are Crazy. I have been using my C600D and I have
NEVER had any problems reading ANY CD-R. EVERY CD-R I make works FINE
both audio and Video CD (vers 2.0). I use green, silver and gold blanks.
NO problems. Maybe these folks use crappy CD-r burners and write crap coasters
but I have never had a problem. the unit ROCKS (except no DTS)...

I am really interested in this player, mostly for the 5 disc changer and the Mega Storage feature. Can anyone tell me what they think of it? Also I don't have a Dolby Digital ready reciever, so I was wondering if it would be better to get a cheaper player. Also I would enjoy any comments on the player and others to help me decide

Great price ($250.00), best picture I've ever seen (using component video output), excellent audio, a remote to die for, plays my homemade vcds and dvds flawlessly. What's not to like? Well... it won't play Super VCD discs, but does anyone's player play those? I sold my old Toshiba single-disc DVD player and bought this Sony mainly to also eliminate the need for a CD changer as well as the old DVD player, but I'm really blown away by this unit. Highly recommended.
