This is by far one of the true masterpieces that Rumiko Takahashi has ever produced. The storylines are all segmented into one or even half an episode at a time ( unlike the continuous storyline that Ranma1/2 does); Lum and all the characters are really cool. All the women in there are like total babes (especially Ran, I like totally deranged red-heads). As far as central characters are conceerned, Ataru and Lum are the definitive centerpieces of this great anime. Even though Ataru can be a total lech, he definitely has a nice side that surprises almost everyone.

After watching 3 episodes, I just gotta say that this is perhaps the most disappointing Rumiko Takahashi series I have ever seen. It totally lags behind the genius of Rumiko's later works, Maison Ikkoku and Ranma 1/2, both of which had main male characters that were at least likeable. Ataru, however, just comes off as an ugly, screamin lech who lacks any charm at all. Lum, however, is basically the only appealing character in the series. Ten and Rei just appear as boring supplementary characters. Not to mention that the series is prone to horribly bad animation and hideously idiotic plotlines. Maison Ikkoku and Ranma 1/2, both of which are comedic masterpieces, are miles above the comedy of Urusei Yatsura, which is a real shame.

Unlike alot of really old-school anime, I absolutely love this series! Both the manga and TV series' are great! Rumiko Takahashi, without a doubt, is the queen of everything!

The only fault that Urusei Yatsura has as a series is that early on the animation quality is poor. However the series is by far one of the most hilarious ever created. Urusei Yatsura relies highly on parody work which includes everything from obscure Japanese Mythology, to Universal and Esoteric symoblism, to popular film. Additionaly the characters differ far from the stock characters that seem to so perpetuate most other series, every single character from Urusei Yatsura can be classified as a round and deep character, and although sometimes we see characters simiar to the cast of Urusei, many of the prototypes in terms of characters originated from this series. Urusei is by far the best series I have ever had the pleasure of watching.

WHOA what a cool show! I like this a LOT! Receives the Sakura Saginomiya seal of approval (she's my favorite character from this show 801 TTS Airbatts. You should see it, just for her ^_^!) I like Cherry a lot, what a funny old man!

I agree, the manga IS much much better. The inane retooling done for the TV show detracts from Takahashi's wit and storytelling brillance. Something of her unique sense of humour is lost, made more disjointed and cliched. Read the manga instead to see some classic slapstick stuff.
