I've first saw Macross DYRL when I was a small child. The movie I saw was in Chinese ( Cantonese ), but it was a hell alot better than the stinkin' English dubbed version. I was also able to watch some re-runs of the Macross TV series in Hong Kong a few years ago, the drawing in the TV animation weren't as superb as the movie. Then I saw Macross II, a total piece of crap. Recently I was able to purchase the original Macross DYRL VCD movie at amazon.com. But when I saw the VCD, I was extremely disappointed that some various scene in the movie was cut off or taken out ( the nudity and the blood scene ). I paid US$40 bucks for this VCD and they sent me a F**KING censored version! Fortunately the movie was still good with the amazing animation, excellent soundtrack and ESPECIALLY Minmay's beautiful songs. The movie have brought back many memories when I first saw the movies as a kid. Even till this day, I still can't believe that Hikaru went for Misa. I think she's too old and not as pretty as Minmay.

The dubbed english version is HORRIBLE compared to the bootleg japanese subtitled version. Otherwise it is probably the best anime movie of all time. Also, watch for the coke can that is shot from rick's veritech in the last fight at the end....dont blink.

Hated the dub, but the original is great, even w/o subtitles. My only gripe would be that the story was compressed/slightly different from the original series, but hey, its Macross!

Boy... I watched this last night knowing that it got a really high rating here... and I was going, What the fu*k?

I mean I love the music and all, but this was a major disappointment. The plot does not flow smoothly, the characters fall in love all of a freaking sudden, and it looked like they tried to cram probably a whole season's plot into a 2-hour movie.

I gave Macross II a 5 because I seriously thought that it was mediocre. Maybe I'm using the evolved standard of today's anime to judge this one, but I have to admit that this one is NO better than its cheap sequel. Actually, I was kinda missing Macross II when I was watching this thing red-eye.
