I've had a few problems with my player locking after being used for extended periods of time. 90% of the problems can be fixed by reseting the unit. i.e. unplug, hold on screen+title buttons, plug back in release buttons and press enter key. Once the unit is reset it works perfectly. I've had mine for about 2 years now and I think I've reset it maybe 3 times. Although the manual says it will play CDRs it doesn't. For VCDs the only media type to use is silver layer CDRWs. It's a bit picky about the VCDs, but so far I haven't had too many problems. Oh and it only takes PAL formated VCDs. For those having graphics problems, most of that is the television set it's being played on. I haven't noticed any problems with my unit on my 27" JVC Television. All in all I have to give it a 9. I only paid $287 for it and I think it was well worth it.

I have had my JVC XV-501 BK for 15 months. The only problem I have ever had with mine is picture freezing and breakups due to dirty rental dvd's. I never realized that several fingerprints will render a dvd unplayable. I now clean every dvd I rent and virtually every one of them plays perfectly. I do come across a dvd every so often that will not play correctly. I wish there was a site for region 1 dvd complaints. That way I could find out if the problem is with the machine or a disk problem. I agree that JVC's customer service is nonexistent. I tried emailing them a dozen times when I first got my machine because there was no warranty card enclosed. I tried calling their 800 number and was always promptly disconnected. I finally gave up. I do like my player though and would purchase another JVC dvd player in the future.

I thought this was a decent player until I started getting freeze/lock-up/pixellation problems. Now it appears that about 10% of my DVD collection will not play through without a freeze/pixellation problem. I returned the unit to the JVC Service Center before the warranty expired, but it was returned as having 'no problem'. Right... DO NOT BUY THIS PIECE OF GARBAGE! Rest assured I'll never buy another JVC product and will advise my friends likewise.

I purchased the JVC 501-BK in April of 99 and returned it in August for the problem of locking up. Now in December of 99 I have had to return it again because it continuously ejects the DVD. I am thoroughly dissatisfied with the quality of the product. It looks as if JVC was in a hurry to promote the new product on the competitive market instead of running it through a movie marathon to fix all the fallacies. I have had a VCR for ten years that has not in the least bit given me any problems. I will plan to purchase a new unit other than JVC

JVC XV501-BK
Great picture and sound when it works.
As others have told before, this unit began to lock up after about 10 uses.
I put in a movie and nothing happens. I can't eject, stop, play, etc., or anything except turn the power off and back on. Then I can eject the dvd.
Terrible factory testing, I must say, on this line.

Some people will mention all kinds of problems and make them seem like they are absolutely detrimental to the system's performance. Others look at what they have and really don't nit-pick. I've got a great DVD player that does everything I expect. I've never experienced most of the complaints that some are having with the JVC. I don't doubt that they are occuring because I've seen them happen on a Sony, Panasonic and I'm sure they'll happen on a JVC. However, after 4 months, I can say that the player has produced a quality picture, great sound and a lot of fun. 99 times out of a hundred, you'll enjoy a care and hassle free night at the movies in the comfort of your own living room! The JVC XV501-BK does just what it's supposed to.....play DVDs. It also throws in a couple of really cool extras.

Enjoy it!

JVC XV501-BK
I purchased the DVD in April of 99 and have already had to return it for service. The unit will lock up as soon as I begin playing a DVD. When the unit locks up I get no response from any of the buttons except for the main power button. I am very pleased with the units sound and video quality. However a unit that has only played 10 or so movies should not be having problem this early. As soon as I get it back from service I will also put it through a movie marathon.
