I bought this set (Sony's 1st set over 32") back in 1997 for just a little over $800 because the store was making room for the new Sony Vega line. After having it set up by a certified video specialist, the picture is astounding. And Sony even lets you turn off the video compression and run the screen in the correct NTSC temperature, which does wonders for the video enjoyment. Not to mention that it sings with DVDs, especially with the component inputs.
Of course, the set was too early for the newer features like widescreen and progressive scanning, but the use of the dual tuner and (the then new) 3D-Digital Comb Filter makes it look brand new. Still a good investment for the right price, if you can find one still being sold.

I know...reviewing this set now is like closing the stable door after Touch Gold has made the Tennessee state line. Anyhow...I picked up this gem "open box" at CC way back in Nov. '97 for under $1900. Best HT investment that I made. I'm still in love with the set, even though the new HDTV sets are sweet looking. After I get my first HDTV set, this baby is going right into the master bedroom. ( Sorry, honey >2:-) )

Both DVD and DBS look fantastic. There's enough video/audio inputs to rival my STR-DB930 receiver. The video input in front (lower right) is a great location for my video cam as well as my kids' Nintendo 64. Love the 3 different sizes for small-in-large PIP...plus the one that simulates two 19" screens side by side are great. two multi-channel scans (12 around one for all chanels or 9 around 1 for your fave channels) is another great feature.

I know people who have picked these sets like new for under a grand now!. If you see one of these sets, it is a great investment for the money.

What can I say but it was the best home theater purchase I have ever made. I paid close to MSRP in January 1998 but once I got it home and calibrated with Video Essentials through my S7000 DVD player and reset all settings to movie mode and 6500 Kelvin, I realize I would have paid even more if the store had calibrated the display model correctly. Features and connections galore! The only new Sony set that I would consider replacing it with would be the new HD Wega but for 8 grand my XBR will do me just fine for many years to come. The 3D digital filter even makes cable look acceptable, one friend with a DSS even commented that it looked better on cable than some of his channels on the dish. If you have a chance to buy one of these at a discontinued price, don't even hesitate. Run, don't walk.

Ok. So you take your brand new Wega home and what do you do? You turn down the brightness, and the picture. Have it callibrated to about half the brightness you saw it in the showroom. And, you get the exact same picture the KV-35XBR48 gets for an aditional $1000 investement!

Save your money, buy a component DVD player and a KV-35XBR48.

This TV does wonders with RF inputs, takes component and S in, plus you don't have to buy a special $600 stand to hold it!

I agonized over this decision for 2 weeks. Buy this or spend another $1000 on the flat screen Wega. Looking back now, I'm sure I would have been much less happy with the Wega purchase.

P.S. if you're thinking of going with a newer sony that uses a 3 line digital filter, forget it. Go for the sets with the 3D digital filter, you won't be sorry the next time your cable signal starts looking a little randy.

I have been looking to upgrade for about a year after joining the DVD world, and of course, hoping to buy some sort of Sony XBR. But I always felt I could not justify paying over 2-grand to watch "Law & Order". Then the local shop had this top-of-the-line unit on sale for $1200 (to make room for the WEGA's), I had to give in. And boy, I am glad I did.
After living with it for a couple of months, I recently tweaked it with Video Essentials, and WOW! My old Sony (which is now in the bedroom) was always seen by myself and friends as a great set, but it now looks like it has a filter on the screen compared to the XBR. A lot of extras-12 channels on the screen at once; split-screen; different viewing and sound modes- I don't really use. But I love the Movie Mode which reduces the color temperature closer to the NTSC standard, and turns off Scanning Velocity Modulation.
I like the WEGAs, but getting this (formerly) critically acclaimed television set for about 60% off (so what if it's discontinued?)was like a dream come true.
If you are looking for the ultimate television for the current over-the-air broadcast standard, and a great deal, you owe it to yourself to look around for this great SonyXBR.

It's a little late in the game for me to submit this review now that the 36XBR200 is out. But the 35XBR48's are still available, and at clearance prices of around $1600-1700, this model has to be the best buy out there. A little less than a year ago, I thought $2000 was a great price for this set. They were very difficult to find a year ago, and Sony had barely caught up with shipments to dealers when they announced the FD models. That's great news for those still considering the 35XBR48.

I even prefer this set to the newer one. Obviously, I'm biased, but I was a bit remorseful knowing that the 200 would be coming out about 6 months after my purchase. But from what I've seen, the picture itself looks very, very similar.

The flat screen of the Wega is attractive, but I'd rather have the more compact cabinet of this set. It gives the illusion of being mostly screen, whereas the 200 looks much boxier. I also think the vertical flatness is what's most important. I really do mean that because too much screen curvature is something that really bothers me.

I'm not knocking the new set--I just think you get fairly equivalent performance (and saving tons of $$$) by getting the 35XBR48. This is still one of the best consumer direct view sets ever made. Definitely recommended!

I just replaced my 10 year old Sony TV with this model. I walked in the store with the intention of Projection TV But after looking at the picture quality and sharpness decided for this beauty. It is loaded with features. Has more in and outs then my Reciever. Picture Quality is Great only draw back is the weight. It took me and two of my friends a good hour to move it into my second floor apt. (The box was too big too carry so we had to drag it using ropes kind a like they use to build the pyramids).Then I had too put in extra support in the entertainment center.

BEST direct view TV that I have seen! I have had this unit for almost 6 months now and I have never had a better picture in my home or seen one on a showroom floor. The first thing I did was set it to Video Essentials DVD specs and then I sat back and was amazed. Beautiful color and picture, excellent well thought out menu system, and very cool visual toys (PIP, split, etc). Very sexy looking chassis. Highly recommended television.
I think that HDTV will produce a better picture (at a price) however.

This set blows the competition away! I've had a 32XBR for going on 6 years and have loved it. I thought that 32 inch was the top. Then I put them side by side. The 32 looks 'crappy' compared to the new 35. THis is one amazing TV. Great picture!
