This amp is AWSOME, it has DD, DTS decoding it has plenty of "clean" power. The DSP programs are great, they expand the soundfield tremendously. I am able to hear more detail then before and the center channel dialogue is much better. The only thing I'm not crazy about is the remote. Even though it"s a learning type and can be programmed with up to 13 macros, and even though its illuminated, I find its operation to be too complex. This isn't a big issue for me because I use a different controller for my system. You couls compare this unit to separates costing thousands more.

This unit is 10 times better thatn the Pioneer DD unit I had and I am not lokking back yet at pioneer recievers. More power than even I could imagine what would usually take me turning the pioneer dial 3/4 of the way takes the Yamaha only 1/2 the way.

It is not every time a unit comes along that is a really winner and stands apart from the rest of the field and this is it. I have not looked back since buying the unit and would recommend to anyone who is looking at getting DTS and DD in the one unit in time for the DTS release of DVD's to go an audition the unit themselves.

Well, I did it. I loved my 2092, it was fantastic; but after an extended test with this unit I was sold. The addition of the 70mm Spectacle DSP really made a difference between this unit and the 2092 on movies. AND all the other bonuses...WOW! The DSP sound is simply fantastic, though there was a bit more hiss at higher volumes than when not using DSP. The music DSPs are excellent also, but a bit overwhelming in sheer scope. As with the 2092--and 3090, I suppose--the 2 front effects channels add amazing depth to the sound and more theater-like imaging. An on-board adjustable cross-over point would be the only other thing I would like to have seen Yamaha stuff into this fantastic unit. Other comments: Clear clean sound up to just above 1/2 way on the volume, even under Pro-logic. Without DSPs on, the sound is very clean up to just under 3/4 volume. This beast has more digital inputs--and even an output--than I know what to do with. The on-board RF demodulator is a nice touch for those of us who still use laser discs. Set-up menus can be quite complex and irritating (at least compared to the 2092). Enough talk, go forth, my children and listen...Rob. (TritonSOG@aol.com)

I just bought DSP-A1. I use it with the NHT 2.9 for the main, NHT 2.5i for the surrounds, NHT 1.5 for the front effects, NHT Audio-center for the center, and Velodyne HGS-12 subwoofer. After listening for hours, I could say that the dsp-a1 sounds INCREDIBLE!!!! It is simply the best sounding integrated amps!!

I went and did it. I upgraded my DSP 3090 to the DSP A1 in fear that my
3090 would become outdated if DTS and 96Khz audio takes off. Here are
some observations I have made.You are not gonna believe this, but the A1
amps sound totally different
to the 3090. They have a much more forward balance making mids and highs

more clear and distinct. The dynamics of the music are also more
prevalent. However, there is a sacrifice. I know how they got a higher

power rating. They cut off some bass. There is no way the A1 generates

as much bass output as the 3090. The bass is more subtle and actually a

bit tighter, but definitely not as much. The 3090 actually had to much
bass to a point, but I liked it.
As for Dolby Digital, all I can say is it is much clearer, more detailed

and more exaggerated. Every little sound is accentuated, especially in
the rears. The DSP modes are a little different as well. This whole
unit is almost like a completely different thing. It is almost as if it

was made by a different manufacturer. Also, you have to turn the volume

knob half way up just to get a decent listening level, just like the
Onkyo is. I assume this allows more gradual volume changes.
I am not totally convinced as of yet that it was worth the upgrade.
This unit sounds totally different from my 3090 and I can't stress that
enough.

I've waited for this thing for 3 months. I checked out a local HIFi store and there it was. So I listened to it and reviewed it's manual while listening to the awesome DTS sound. The shop put in a DTS LD of "JP2: The Lost World" and it was awesome. It's a bit expensive, but it just does so much. This is my first Amp/DSP so I don't really have anything to compare it to. It just has lots of power, 7 freakin' channels, DSPs up the wazzu, and DTS! The thing definitely sounds amazing, but I'm eating ramen for the next few months to make up for the dent in my wallet, but I think it was worth it.

The downer: The remote is not fully programmable as one would think. You can't reprogram the tape 1, LD, CD, and one other that I'm forgetting basically all of section A and LD of section B. The rest of the inputs can be programmed. That's kind of a jip for $2600. Heck my dad's pioneer remote (7 years old) let me reprogram practically every button atleast twice to three times! And the remote costed only $75 at the time. That was a nightmare in itself, but heck I still had the option.

One other thing a Tone Bypass Switch. Where is it? I must be blind or something cuz I can't even find a reference to it in the manual. If anyone knows please tell me! (sdf1@gte.net)

The workmanship is good (gotta love that door, can't really be busted like a sony electric door) and it's all metal of some sort. No cheap plastic dials or faces (not counting the little knobs or the transparent readout).

It's worth the $2000-$2200, but $2600 is a bit high, but then you're also paying for the Yamaha name. They know they can get away with it and they're right.

There is no Tone Bypass circuitry on this unit. The RXV receiver line has it but the DSP A1 doesn't. The preamp in the A1 is superior to the receiver line and I guess yamaha feels it unnecessary to put that feature into the DSP A1. The DSP A1 doesn't have speaker B outputs for another room either. But what it does have is aawesome. Great power, processor, preamp, and it just looks fabulous.

This is absolutely an awesome unit. I love the Dolby digital performance. It sounds great in 2 channel. DTS is a nice feature, I hope it takes off !!!

I like the way it sounds for movies, not as much for music. DTS is knocked down to 2.0 but no Yamaha ad tells you this. A bit highly priced at $2500. You could do much better with separates for a little more money. People will realize this once the hype dies down. New gear usually goes through this.

What the heck are you talking about that DTS is knocked down to 2.0
I get 5.1 channels in all DSP modes when operating in DTS. Don't give a bad review on a product you don't know how to properly use. This unit is the closest you can get to separates at a fraction of the cost.

Finally,
I got some explanation from Yamaha about 56009 handling properly a DVD-TDS stream.
DSP-A1 WILL properly recognize a DTS stream from a DVD (DTS compatible player), parently there is no standard yet for
96kHz!
If the industry will go to 96kHz DSP-A1 will downmix 96kHZ to 48kHz and still play it back.
The rumors about Meridian and Madrigal where due to a fact that both companies where using a prerealesd (beta) specs for DTS
in their products, and specs has changed.
DSP-A1 is a fully licensed DTS unit, and contains the final DTS code.
There is more....
I just spoke to falks from DTS about all this.
Well, parently all this are ONLY rumors, and they know about it (bad marketing).
The DVDs Video audio standard is 48kHz!!!!!!
The DVDs Audio ONLY standard (future) may be 96 kHz, it's proposed to be like that, however nothing has been decided yet.
So according to DTS, the upcoming DVD movies with DTS, WILL CONTAIN DTS DATA with 48kHz NOT 96kHz

What can I say? Awesome sound, the auto-sensing of input type (DD, DPL, DTS etc) makes it easy to use.

A winner. (could be about $500 less however)
