Superb service. Always courteous and extremely efficient. I have bought equipment from them for tens of thousands of $$$ and they have always delivered the right products, on time, at very competitive prices. Mike Fowler (the manager) is a delight to work with. Once I had a problem with a certain manufacturer's equipment and he intervened and solved the problem immediately.

Best service in the business.

Service was wonderful. I didn't know where to start, just wanted a big SCT. They steered me toward an 8" or 10", but I ended up buying the 12" just 'cause i wanted to. They then recommended accessories and explained why they prefered certain ones. Other reviews of the products corroborated with what they told me. I even bought a camera outfit from them despite those not being on their website. The service was wonderful! Any question i had was promptly and thoroughly answered. Their prices were competitive and they threw in some thigns for a discount because I bought so much from them. This was before the Meade LX200 discount and such. As far as shipping goes, I was tremendously impressed. They ended up being able to reroute a scope from Meade to my shipping location and it took less than two weeks from order to receiving it. For my $8,000+ purchase, they handled it very professional and with a personal touch.

This was my first telescope purchase in almost 25 years so I really was behind on the technology available today.
After two months of reading hundreds (thousands?) of articles and opinions on various websites, newsgroups and email lists as well as scouring back-issues of a few magazines, I narrowed my choices down to a handfull of options.
I sent my "ideas" to several internet retailers asking for both prices and, if available, opinions.
The folks at OPT not only were competitive in price (only 1 price was lower, and that was by about $20US on a $3000 purchase) but they sent me a good description of the pros and cons of each of my choices. They ever recommended an upgrade or two for me to research.
After all of this work (the rest of my "applicants" only sent prices) I purchased an LX-200 from them with a few *cough* accessories. 4 days later I was looking into the dark skies of my Texas backyard with it.
As long as they provide the carefully thought out advice they did on my initial purchase I will continue to give them all of my astro business.

Prices are as high as everyone elses. They will extend discount coupons (mine were 20% off coupons) to be used against your NEXT purchase. Knowledge is better than average. They seem to always be rushed because business is so good. They rarely make a mistake and if they do make one it has been very minor. Helpfull and cheerful folks.

I recently placed/received an order with OPT and here's my evaluation:

Called to place and order for several ep's and some accesories. Talked to Greg (the boss). He was knowledgable but I felt rushed while talking to him. I was told that the order would be at my house within 5-7 business days. Order deliered at my door in 6 days by Fed Ex ground on a Saturday, I was impressed. Everything I ordered was packaged well for shipping and came in perfect condition.

Two day after receiving the merchandise I decided to return one of the lesser items (7 days on returns/exchanges, full value minus shipping I believe). I talked to Mike Fowler (manager) this time. I explained how the product didn't meet my expectations and told him that I would like to exchange it for a different item of equal value. He asked if the item was still in new condition (box and all). I told him it was and he agreed to the exchange. Mike was very helpful and a pleasure to talk to.

Overall I was very impressed with OPT's service. The prices were on par with the other large astronomy stores. They have a knowledgable staff and use Fed Ex ground for shipping (a definate plus!). I was going to initially give OPT a 9 because I felt rushed the first time I called... but after taking everything into consideration I'm giving them a 10. OPT will be getting all my business in the future.

If your looking for quality astronomy dealer, look no further.

I've purchased everything from accessories to CCD cameras from them and always found the service and support to be excellent. When I had a CCD problem, they even attempted a web search to help resolve it.

Don't mean to ruin the nearly flawless record going but.. I've dealt with these guys twice and both times something went wrong. Well sorta wrong. First time I ordered a dovetail from them and they sent me the wrong plate. Ok..So they fixed it and sent me the right one but didn't pay for the return shipping. Plus, When I called to order the plate, they tried to charge me $15-20 more than their web site price. Had to talk them down. Order #2: Ordered another dovetail plate..Same deal. Had to "talk" them down from their same high price. I guess they figure if some newbie/dummy is gonna pay whatever price they throw out, then so be it. Yuck! Aside from having to talk them down and them fouling up the first order (which happens sometimes), they were pretty helpful with any questions I had. Oh! And shipping charges were a bit steep too.

I ordered a Counterweight system from OPT. The sales person told me that it was $27.00 more than what was listed on their Web Page. I explained to them that the price I saw was on their Web Page. He then told me that the price would be what it was on their Web Page. I come to find out that the price he had originally quoted me is the price that other dealers charge. Yet they let me have it at the lower price. This really made me happy, The part showed up in only 3 days. I would highly recommend them to anyone.

Great company! When my 12.5" Starfinder was delivered from Meade with a bad mirror, OPT gave me a free loaner 8" Dob with some Meade series 4000 eyepieces so I wouldn't be left without a telescope at the Star Party this weekend. And it was all there suggestion (I never would have thought of asking such a thing, but they made the offer and it is very typical of the lengths they go to for their customers).

Also, by joining their OPTAS clup, you can get 10% off most accessories (eyepieces, sky atlases, etc). I do all my shopping at the store rather than mail order from them, however I often find myself calling the 1-800 number to ask questions on products and just general astronomy related stuff. These folks are extremely knowledgeable and friendly. They obviously enjoy their work and it shows!!! I wouldn't buy from anyone else.

Great place to hang out if you are ever in Oceanside!!!
