Entry: Astronomy:Equipment Reviews:Misc Accessories:Baader Mark V

What can I say, my favorite all time observing accessory. The Mark Vs/24mm Panoptics combo spends the more time in my focuser than any other eyepiece. When I do public outreach I normally use a Parracor Type 2 with an Ethos but when it is my observing time, the Mark vs handle about 90% of the workload. If you can afford a pair, they are very well worth the investment. Save up, don't settle for less!!!

Excellent planetary eyepiece even though I no longer own it. This eyepiece was a top performer with my Takahashi refractor. It provided views that were crisp and contarsty. I would still have it but being that I use and undriven alt-az mount with my refractor, the small FOV makes it a pain in the butt to keep having to move the scope. If you are going to use this eyepiece in a driven scope, go for it. if not, go for and Ethos or a non-zoom Nagler.

The king of kings!!! The views through this thin in my 16" F4 dob with a Parracor Type 2 are just sick. M31, M105 & M32 in the same FOV with sharp to the edge stars, yes, yes yes. The Double Cluster, M46, the entire Orion sword, and so on. Just a marvelous eyepiece, as good today as when it first came out. An excellent companion to the 21mm Ethos. Pure bliss : )

I have a pair of these that I use for medium/high power in my Mark V binoviewers. These work very well for planetary use and well as planetary nebula, small globular clusters and galaxies. NOTE: If you are going to use these in a Baader Mark V binoviewer, you need to add a parfocalizing ring where the barrel meets the body to make sure that they focus equally. I was able to compare them side to side to the venerable 12.5mm Docter UWA and these held their ground rather well. The Docters did seem to eek out just very slight bit more detail but the 13mm Naglers were much more easy to use as far as ergonomics are concerned. For binoviewing that is a must. Also, compared to the $650 a pop Docters, these guys are quite a bargain.

Although I have several Ethos eyepieces in my case, 6mm (just ordered), 8mm, 13mm, 17mm & 21mm, the 17mm is quickly becoming my favorite. This eyepiece seem to fit my scope (16" F4) perfectly. It has become my go to eyepiece and as of late has been spending the most time in the focuser along with the Parracor Type 2. M42 and open clusters are framed perfectly. I love it and I don't see me getting rid of it any time soon.
