here we go again. of course under the right conditions a large apeture reflector is going to out perform a much smaller refractor. but from my own personal experience the right conditions for observing with a large reflector are about six times less likley to be present any given night, at least where i am. ease of set up, outstanding views almost any night and low maintenance are hard to beat. lets not forget to compare apples to apples, this is astro-physics we are talking about, the finest refractors on the planet. the price is high but not as high as the takahashi scopes which do not perform consistantly as good. i have never heard an owner of astro-physics complain about anything, its like these scopes are built with the finest quality control there is, hence the long wait. bottom line, this is one of the finest 5" refractors period. you will not be disappointed. as far as someone saying they would rather be under the stars with a tasco scope, i am stunned into silence with that comment.

I agree with the above comment. You can't compare a top-of-the-line refractor like the AP to a great EL. If I had to choose I would go with the AP. Deep sky fans should go with an obsession or starmaster.
What kind of idiot would even think of comparing an AP to a tasco. Tasco make junk scopes. AP make the best scopes in their aperture class. I agree with the above comment that the Tasco comment stunned me.

If it was an atemp at humor than why did the guy vote? That just brings the great refractors score down.

To the above comment. AP and TMB are THE BEST. takahashi is one of the greatest. I you are thinking about a four in. refractor, go with a TMB. AP's waiting list is too long, Takahashi's FS series shows false color, and televue shows color as well. I f you want a great refractor, go with TMB. Its only equal is AP. A TMB shouldn't have a wait as long as APs. It is your move though.

i would like to point out that the difference between these scopes opticaly is for the most part not even noticeable unless you line them all up and do a side by side comparison. TMB, tele vue, AP, takahashi, they are all great scopes. i do favor the AP scopes myself. i can tell you that in some instances you can not see any differences until you really start pushing the power way high. i really think you would be happy with any one of them, the only thing to think about is focal length, and aperture. do you want more of a planetary scope or something that can provide a more versatile viewing field, low power wide field as well as high power. and some of these scopes are more readily available than others. do your home work before you lay down the money, none of these scopes are cheap. they do however represent the finest scopes in this class.
