Subject: Moved Message By: Anonymous (xxx.xxx.244.94) Date: 08/02/2000 04:29:17 pm PST I keep reading often very bad comments about the Meade 178ED, but when I read something so stupid as a comparison with a 60mm refractor, I think it's about time I share the experiences we had with mine: For a while I've been reluctant to tell experienced friends what I was able to see with my 178ED because I knew it would sound unreal; but as of now, I have enough qualified whitnesses so I can tell. Regularly in good but not so fantastic skies, we can push the magnification of this instrument well beyond 900x (we use a Vixen Lanthanum 3.5mm with a barlow located ahead of the prism). This setup provides a very sharp picture of Saturn from wich any unexperimented observer can see 3 sub-structures of the rings while the more skilled ones can see 5. On Jupiter we initially saw a razor sharp picture of the shade of one of its moon being projected on the planet surface. Then, we had a very definite picture of that moon right in front of the Jupiter disk. At the same occasion, we had a 4-inches Takahashi and... sorry... there was simply no comparison. However great this little 4-inches is, it simply just wasn't able to achieve such a level of resolution. Period. Again, later in the night when the great Orion Nebulea showed up, once again the Meade 178ED demonstrated a clear supperiority over the 4-inches Takahashi. The big Meade just revealed infinitely much more details of the clouds and the structure, it was simply just not in the same category as the poor little 4-inches. What kind of 60mm refractor does that smart man own to equal or better that? Maybe you don't believe me? Just pay yourself a trip here and I will show you with pleasure.
