Rex,

I saw your post on your NightSky Dob, and I'm considering an 18". How is the movement of the mount? Is it pretty smooth? How about the finish? Any other comments?

Thanks,

I'm not Rex, but I have a 16-inch Night Sky.

It's smooth, but not at the level of a friends's Obsession. As usual for Dobs, the altitude motion is smoother than the azimuth motion. One good feature is that there's enough "stick" that you can swap eyepieces and the scope won't move. That's after I added some more weight at the top end, as my scope was initially bottom-heavy when used
with light eyepieces.

The finish is good.

It's very solid. It barely fits through doors and when it hits the door frame, you're going to dent the frame, because the structure won't give!

A 16 is big and heavy enough that I try to get help when lifting the mirror box in to the car. The 18'll be even bigger and heavier. Consider the weight carefully before you go up to that level of hugeness.

The removeable mirror cell is good; it certainly makes rinsing the mirror easier!

The black paint on the truss bars is flaking off, even with relatively light use. The truss bars' tops were rough and started to scratch the upper ring: I smoothed them and coated them with polyurethane, but that should have been done by Jim Nadeau.

I'm not 100% happy with the structure, if that isn't clear.
