I also have ordered this scope. I talked to a rep at Meade and was told that they would be shipping the first half of December.Of course I did not ask if it was 2001 or 2002;-)

The choices that a first time scope buyer has... about the time I settle on a top price of about $700... for the Orion XT10.... Meade comes out with the LXD55.... a few $100 more (which to me is a lot!) and I get the auto finder gizmo... hard to resist. And to someone that is more familiar with the tripod style mount that you see at all the stores on all the department models... the Meade seems like it should set up much better in my back yard than the round Dob mount... until you read other reviews.

It would be great to be able to find a black and white review regarding these 2 (except that the Meade may or not be available since Nov 01 or the second half of Dec 02 or 03!

It sounds like the workmanship is comparible... and give or take a motor here, an eye piece there... they are really comparible in price...

To make things a little more difficult... there is no place to see scopes in this price range within about 300 miles of here!... Any advise for someone who is at the top of their budget, and wants everything for nothing! Is there going to be a difference in what I see when looking at the Moon?... or some far off star cluster? Is one going to be more blurry or distorted than the other? What about maintenance... is one more fragile than the other?

I really appreciate all the comments I have read on these 2 scopes!

I can't believe what Im seeing, I am new to Astronomy and confused by Meade corp's way of handling customers. People are shelling out 20% the cost to wait in LINE to buy a product that hasnt been even reviewed?? What the hell is that noise?? Well I just got off the phone with someone who JUST spoke to a MEADE rep today and found out the LXD55 isnt even in Production yet!! youll be lucky to see it out in spring sometime!.. hope you all enjoy giving out money for someone else to use.. oh well, Im sure meade (or whoever) has your 20% is enjoying money to have on hand for investing, or making books look good for the year. SUCKERS! I'll take my bus elsewhere .

I think I will get a pier to mount it on thats the way to nip tripod problem in the bud!
For the price I think it will be a good deal so what if meade does not know how to make tripods at these prices can't complain!
Have you guys went to some of these sights & looked at the prices for 10" Maksutov Newtonians at least thats what they call them But if you look at the front of them they look prety much the same?
I know you may not be able to compare the two one is well baffled the other looks like after the waranty runs out I will baffle it myself I don't mind geting a little dirt you might call it greese on my hands!
There are other way to reinforce the tripod thats with the scope!
Put some vibration pads on the bottom of the tripod use some weights at the bottom also and by almeans do not extend the tripod legs!!!!!
I know it all sounds a liitle extream But a father of eight children and needs to make every dollar count!

I usually stay out of such dicussions but simply could not help myself. I would strongly recommend letting Meade work the as-yet-undetermined bugs out of this system before even considering purchasing one. An early autostar/ETX owner, I speak from experience when saying that there will likely be significant problems when this scope arrives (the ETX was returned, luckily for me). It is my opinion that Meade is counting on you, the over-eager buyer, to find problems, and at less than $900 for a 10" scope, mount, tripod, and computer control, there will be plenty of problems to find (the most you'll ever get is what you pay for). Just my opinion.

What I'm waiting is for them to make it available the OTA so I can mount it on a G11. 10" OTA for around $700 should be pretty good. I have never bought a newtonian before but since this one has corrector plate sealing it, I can use it pretty much like a SCT and don't worry that much about dust. That's why I have been using refractors and SCT. But this scope will change that.

Judging from the cool-down of my 4 inch Maksutov-Cassegrain the lucky ones who may get this scope in the spring should set it outside right away.
If you do this you should be able to use it by July!

I would like to opportunity to use one of these telescopes,

LXD55 10"

but since they cost $879 in the US and a whacking
£1199 in the UK ( thats approx $1678 equivalent in the UK)
I doubt I will. If a Meade representative wishes to comment
on this rediculous prices here I would be pleased to speak
with him her.

Subject: Schmidt-Newts?

Can anyone speak to the performance of Schmidt-Newts in general? I've never looked through one. I have looked through a Mak-Newt, however, and found it to be spectacular -- but the price was over $2 grand so it had better be spectacular! The LXD prices are obviously very attractive. I can't wait to learn how they actually perform -- literally. I'm shopping for a new scope now, and I might just become an LXD guinea pig! I'll pass on info if I get it.

thanks,
MTB

I have been told it is due to import duty plus shipping that allows for the price difference. Also that the prices quoted exclude tax. This may be the case. But generally most Meade prices are dollar for pound which although expensive can be jusitified, this twice the asking price in the US is just a rip off!
