Subject: my first real telescope By: Anonymous (xxx.xxx.174.18) Date: 06/26/2003 06:28:05 am PST the mirrors are good proper telescope mirrors but the drives are poorly made and noisy, you'll have trouble using the goto: backlash is bad and the goto device fails at below freezing. The mount is shoddy and will wear fast. The scope does not hold collimation well, and is actually quite tricky to get back in alignment without a laser or cheshire: the secondary spider is very flimsy. However, this is the scope that got me back into astronomy. If it is set up right, you'll stare right up at Jupiter and Saturn for hours, the brighter globular clusters are lovely too. Oh and throw away the eyepieces - especially the 1 inch toys. They are useless. If you can't point to the general area of the sky in which M13 lives then don't expect to find it with the GOTO! it just isn't accurate enough. Subject: Over 720 people think it's a reasonable scope By: Anonymous (xxx.xxx.244.54) Date: 07/13/2003 10:52:14 pm PST The Meade4504Telescopes eGroup on Yahoo!Groups now has over 720 members. It is true that this modest scope has problems, but for the money, it's is a terrific learning tool for the serious beginner. And the Meade4504Telescopes eGroup provides a wealth of information and advice for owners of all Meade 4.5" reflector telescopes.
