After 30 plus years of star hopping its a real treat to go after the really hard stuff. With the wedge its a real strong tool for serious astrophotography. Hats off to Meade for supplying me with a awsome piece of equipment to explore the cosmos. I ordered a 12" LX200 GPS about two months ago. I am on a waiting list, since they are still in production, but are supposed to be shipping them Dec. 27th. Can't wait. My first scope is a Tasco 11-TR 4.5" Reflector. I probably never got it collminated because everything but the moon is fuzzy. It's for sale if anyone is interested. The main purpose of this reply is: What do you mean by "With the Wedge..." I've heard the term before, but what is it? It's really important to have an equatorial system when doing astrophotography (as opposed to a alt-azimuth system)so that the stars don't rotate as time elapses. Seems they are still working on getting the LX200 10" GPS out. They NOW expect to ship in a "few weeks". Optics are excellent. The now-standard micro-focuser works flawlessy. After the first time initializing the GPS system, which took about 10 minutes, GPS acquisition now takes approx. 30 secs. from my location (Vermont). Seldom do the stars from GPS targeting find their way into the F.O.V. of the eyepiece, but once centered all other targets are within specs. The giant field tripod is quite adequate for the beast - but the vibration pads may be a good idea if one is considering astrophotography or CCD imaging. This scope is very quiet while tracking. I hardly notice it at all. As regards the 147,000+ objects in the Autostar II database, the menus are clear and easy to maneuver. Interfacing this scope with programs such as The Sky works nicely. Though Meade wants around $60 for a 50' cable, if you hunt around on the net you can get the parts and build same for under $3.00. I did. That way you don't have to buy a laptop and a million batteries to run the scope. Nice for cold nights. Objects selected from an external PC are centered as well as those selected from the Autostar's database. Only drawback is the weight. The OTA and base assembly weigh about 75lbs, and the tripod around 50lbs. Best to eat steak or take Tai Chi! nagognog@space.com Page 1 of 1 | ||||||||
