Both the manga and the anime series targetted female audience, of ages 10 to 14. But it also appealed to boys because of the mecha element, and to older viewers as well because of the depth and gravity of the main theme of the series. So it's no shame for you to like this definitely girlie series, even if you're a guy. I am a 26-year-old male and I have no problem with the fact that I like this series so much that I have to rent out all 49 episodes at least twice a year and watch them again and again. I like it because it provides a very healthy set of messages and important lessons in life (as well as the killer battle scenes and cute voice of Fuu ^_^), and I have no problem with it because I am pretty secure about my manhood.
