As we know Eva is piloted through a neural connection, and Asuka's Eva was shredded to pieces. Ouch. Remember when Sachiel broke 01's left arm. Shinji had hard time to believe his arm was OK in the hospital. And Asuka's brain tells her "sorry, but your right arm is split in two, your head is pierced, you've been gutted AND ripped to shreds". Not nice. Anno's a mean guy (mostly, he can be nice though like in the end. Shinji and Asuka together = a damn happy pair) to the characters. So Asuka wasn't a zombie in the end, but she was in shock. And don't always watch the ending with those black glasses on. It's a basic "and they lived happily ever after"-thing. Eva is dark and pessimistic only if you want it to be. There are positive things in it too (mostly when it comes to Shinji's and Asuka's relationship), so don't be so dark in your view.
