Apogee Astro Chair
I have had this chair for about a year, and have used it several times, both at star parties and at home. I have been pleased with the no-nonsense design and the reasonable quality, especially given the relatively low price. The chair has held up well so far. I do keep it in the original plastic bag and shipping box during storage and transport. It is comfortable, relatively easy to adjust for different heights, and covers a fairly wide range of seat positions. My only "complaint" is that I consider the folding leg spreader bar far too easy to "fold up" during chair movement while seated, and this can result in inadvertant folding of the chair with me sitting on the grass. I seemed to have solved this by using a length of flexible plastic pipe with a slit cut along its length. It installs easily over the folding spreader bar, and since using it, I haven't had any problems. I rate the chair as a solid 8.

I bought the chair at NEAF because it was the lowest priced astrochair available. One of it's two detractions, in my opinion, is that in order to raise and lower the seat, you have to loosen the rear bolt, then retighten once your preferred height is reached. At first I didn;t mind doing this, but it might be nicer if this was slightly re-engineered to avaoid having to doi this. It fully supported me when I was at my heaviest , nearly 290 lbs. but I only felt comforatble letting other people sit on it when I was sure the bolt was tightened to secure the seat. The other thing I didn't like was that it does not fold completely flat. In order to fold it, the seat has to be raised above the folding support at the bottom of the chair (which by the way sometimes folds down instead of up - a stop should be incorprated into the support.)

I've had this chair over 2 years now and am quite pleased with it. I don't have the spreader problem the one review mentions and I solved the tightening knob issue the other review mentions by removing the bumper material on the side of the rails. I wouldn't call the motion of adjusting height, "smooth as silk" but it's just fine by me.

I also don't have any problem getting the chair to lie flat for storage so maybe there are different versions? My only issue (minor at that) is the padding is rather thin. I don't have a lot of "natural" padding myself so it gets a little hard at the end of the night. But usually I'm bundled up against the cold so it's only on warm summer nights that I notice.

A really nice value getting you into an adjustable viewing chair. Recommended for those wishing to save a few $$$'s.

Mike
