Hey, a UFO! Oh, it is just Venus. When it is out, Venus is neato. It resolves as a crescent (3/01) and it is bigger in apparent size than Jupiter. I find a Barlow and a purple filter reduces the glare at night and make the crescent shape. It has little detail to admire. Rather, what is impressive about it is knowing that the bright thing in the sy is an actual place. It has valleys, mountains and a cloudy sky. It is as big and as solid as the Earth. It is so close, so real, yet always out of reach. Despite its similarity to Eart, Venus is, of course a strange place indeed. Anyone going to admire its unique landscape would not last a minute having been crushed, suffocated and melted on arrival.
