Celestron Ultima 12.5mm

Stunning eyepiece. Stars are crisp and bright across the entire fov, (except for last 5% depending on scope). I've used this in F8 and F6 refractors and an F5 reflector. Simply breathtaking in the two refractors and wonderful in the reflector. In doing a side-by-side with the 12mm UO HD ortho I found I preferred the view in the Ultima. Of course the fov was larger but I also found the image just a little sharper (more contrast) which made the view more engaging. If the view was brighter in the ortho, I didn't notice it. I'd call it even on brightness and advantage to the Ultima on contrast. Highly recommended.

Celestron Ultima 12.5mm

My local dealer Vancouver Telescope managed to find me one of these fine 12.5 discontinued Celestron eps. Very good contrast, clarity and sharp field with this ep with my various refractors. First light was with my 152 f/6.5 refractor at a semi-dark site on the bright fragment B of the most recent comet in the night sky Schwassmann-Wachmann 3 on the evening of May 13th/06. Impressive light transmission and contrast at 80 power on the fan shaped comet with a distinct pencil like nucleus and long faint tail on a night of a full Moon. Good performance under less than ideal conditions. Definite keeper and completes my set of Celestron Ultimas {30,18,12.5,7.5 and 5mm eps}.

Celestron should have kept this long proven good quality and popular series of eps in their product line IMHO. Are you listening Celestron!!!

Celestron Ultima 12.5mm

Some EP's may work better at f/4, but once you get to f/6 or above the Ultima works as well as any EP I have looked through. The contrast is very good. I see colors in stars very easily with Ultima EP's. I also own 7.5mm, 10mm, 18mm and 30mm Ultima EP's. They all have excellent optical performance. Eye relief gets short on the 7.5mm and 10mm, but I feel very comfortable with the eye relief on the 12.5mm Ultima. Except in a fast Dob, you should maintain sharp Airy discs out to the field stop. I use mine mainly for binoviewing with an f/15 Mak-Cass where it serves as a standard planetary EP. The exit pupil it yields in long focal ratio Maks and classic achromats is perfect for planetary use. Those who say it's not as sharp as a TV Plossl are a bit addled in my opinion. My telescope dealer prefers the Ultima line to the TV plossl line, he sells both lines, and he has looked through plenty of EP's in his life.
