Definitive Technology BP2X
(1) As a small to mid-sized surround I would rate these great Bi-polars a 9. (With a speaker like Definitive's own larger 6-driver BP-X as a 10)

(2) Rated against using a full size as a surround...well its not really fair.

These units sound good through the full listenable range of my Yamaha DSP-A1 Integrated Amp. (About 3/4 of total usable volume) Distortion is kept to a minimum. Low bass of course is distorted at higher volumes, but changing the speaker set up to route low bass to your mains/subwoofer will solve this problem. (Low-bass is supposed to be non-directional anyway, so running the surround bass through your subwoofer will not sound odd)

Mounted high and behind my seating position, these units sound fantastic. The direct sound from the inward-facing slope provides for good AC-3 or DTS reference sound, while the ouward-facing slope fills the rear listening space with ambience and effects (non-directional). (Note: I have also mounted a friend's pair of quality Dipolar speakers in both the same position and to the sides--as recomended for Di-poles--and I prefer the sound of the bi-poles by just a hair. So I cannot argue the Di-pole/Bi-pole debate, I like both)

For reference, I am using two (2) sets of BP-2Xs. 1 set for rear surrounds and the other for front effects. (See information on Lexicon DC separates or Yamaha DSP-A3090/DSP-A1/RXV-2092 or RXV-2090 for more details on front effects speaker arrangements (Awesome)) The rest of my system consists of Definitive BP-2004s for my mains (w/ built-in 10" subs!!), definitive BP-2002 center speaker, and a Yamaha DSP-A1 as integrated Amp/processor. (Go DTS!!!) The rest changes too often to comment on.

If you have any questions about any of the items in my review, write me.

Definitive Technology BP2X
Good value vs. some of the more expenseive Dipolar speakers for surrounds. Better bass than most small bookshelf speakers. Aluminum tweeter matches voices perfect with other Def. Tech. speakers with the same tweeter. Can use as mains if you like diffused sound instead of direct sound. {All purist stereo nuts cry out in anguish at the heathen comment} Great overall for a small surround.
