Pretty decent speakers. Bose doesnt make this stuff any more and this is actually much better than the newer models.

These biggest of Bose speakers were discontinued by Bose some years ago. I stumbled upon the last brand new pair at my local hi-fi store in 1995 - on sale for $400 because they were floor models. You will be hard-pressed to find a better pair of speakers in this price range. Outstanding power handling capability. I cranked the volume as high as my ears could withstand it and these speakers didn't flinch, just stood there and delivered with authority. The twin 10" woofers deliver tight, clean, unmuddied bass, and the speaker has a bass port in back at the base. Each speaker has four 4" tweeters configured in a very unusual manner, two aimed backwards at opposite 45 degree angles , and two aimed forwards in the same manner. This enables the sound to be directed at multiple angles at once, making for a very large "sweet spot." I have been very happy with these speakers, they have a pure, powerful sound, and even though they were designed for music listening, I have incorporated them very successfully into my home theater system. Their accurate reproduction and big speaker sound makes it like you were in the theater. If you can find a pair, buy them, you will not be disappointed.

Hey, I feel ya'! I owned a pair of these puppies, well 2 pair back in '93. I was still new to true audio production and sold both pair. I couldn't quite understand the sound that came from them. I ended up buying a pair of paradigm SKE 11's...didn't like them...to digital sounding. Anyway, bought about 3 more pair of "high end speakers" and ended up with the Klipsch 5.5's.  These are awesome sounding and very dynamic but... I visited one of the guys that I sold the one pair of 601 series III to and I was taken over again.  I've since gone to school to become an Elecronics Engineer and have come to find out that you don't have to use elaborate and expensive parts to create incredible sound, just good science and engineering prowess.  Trust me

P.S.- Found some 601series3 on ebay...it's Christmas in April.

clear crisp sound,i use them for my home theater.AWESOME i still havent hear a pair of speakers that can deliver such clarity.

i have found a set of bose 601 on the streets in switzerland. i have had 2 hifi-set connected to it. even with the cheaper one the sound is incredible. in my small 4x6 m room full of computers... michael przewrocki wasgenring 74 4055 basel-switzerland-phone 004179 5117533

Bose 601 Series II Direct/Reflecting...had them since 1984 and they are still going strong. Great sound and quality. Can't find these anymore.

Best home stereo money I've spent in 30 years.

Nothing comes even close, oh by the way, I am an Audio
Technician so this IS my professional opinion.

Let the speakers do the work. Don't over process with heavy equilization and stuff.  Get a strong amp, preferrable a carver, and let them do there thing.

I've got this speaker since 1980...and it's damn good in sound....it's bass is awesome....If i can find a new pair again...i'll buy them!

I own 4 601 III speakers. Right from new one of the woofers were junk. I blew out my reciever on one channel. I like the sound , I just got one bad speaker. it has blown 3 times now. Probably a cross over problem .
I owned 601 in high School and loved them . Took them to all the parties. Got alot of compliments. Too bad after selling them to my brother, the foam on the Bass woofers rotted out. Now they are sitting in a storage area. Sad..... Bose needs to work on the quality of their woofers. I rate them a 6 , because the sound is awesome.

I've had my 601s since 1991 when I bought them brand new at the Navy Exchange. These pair I consider jems! Awsome sound clarity from deep base to high freq. But have you tried hooking the 901 active equalizer into these babies? Man oh man ... they blew me off! If your a Star Trek fan, slide the DVD and go to a Bridge scene. You will actually feel the subtle lows and vibrations.
I have also used them on dance parties (weddings and b-day)in good size rooms. I have cranked the volume for some good chest thumping experience and they worked flawlessly.
Best bang for the buck!

You love those?...try the series 3. Man, oh Man, these things handle almost twice the power and sound so open and real you'd swear that the musicians were right in your home.
People who bash these speakers, in my opinion, don't understand what Bose set out to do...Mimic live music and they did it, successfully. It can be a confusing speaker if you don't know what you're dealing with.  Read your manual and position the speakers accordingly and you'll be rushing home to listen to these puppies.

I got these speakers from my dad a month ago and i just recently added a pair of bose 301 speakers to my system and it sounds awesome!!!!!!!!! i willl never sell these speakers

Had my 601s since 1977. The bass speakers are rotting out but BOSE is offering a great deal for this known problem. contact them and they will tell you how to trade the old ones in for new ones cheap.
