Philips Magnavox DVD 850 AT
A nice player all-around. Has all the latest features, like
2-lens pickup and 10-bit video conversion. I enjoy zoom and
a remote with jog/shuttle the most. Size matches my receiver.
Has all the new features. It can even play my CDs backwards.
Can be set to 4:3 or 16:9. Made in Japan. Got it new for 335.

I bought this player for $399 at 800.com, free 3-day select shipping, and i took good advantage of their $50 in free movies by nabbing Blade, Air Force One, and Godzilla along with it.

I'm very pleased with the player so far. I have a DD Ready receiver, and the 5.1 sound is very good. I've heard the decoder on the Sony S500D is better, but this player passes DTS for some future proofing, which the Sony does not. It also has a limited setup for the Decoder, test tone, and delay/balance setting.

The picture quality is very good, and I have yet to see the player make any mistakes on the 15 or so DVD's i've watched on it so far. It even makes my old 20" crappy Sanyo TV look good, which is saying alot. :) I can't wait to get a better 27" or so TV and dump this RF Modulator I bought at Radio Shack so I can run the Composite video from my reciever straight into the TV (still not better than S-VID, but my Reciever only has 3 video inputs and no S-VID)...

I've heard bad things about the remote, but I have to say, after learning it, I haven't had much problems finding the buttons on it in the dark. The jog/shuttle wheel is fun to play around with, as well as the zoom feature, but I don't use them very often.

All in all I'm very satisfied with the purchase, and wouldn't hesitate to recommend the player. It has it all, DTS support, Optical and Coax digital output, Composite/SVID/Component video output, decent onboard DD5.1 Decoder. I haven't had any reason to complain about it at all yet.

P.S. I did have one small problem while watching Contact. I pressed the pause/jog button to pause it. The manual says press pause/jog again to resume play but that doesn't work. I pressed pause/jog about 15 times in a row playing around and when I pressed play to resume playing the movie the sound was absent. I pressed stop and then play again and it was fine. No biggie as far as I'm concerned. I havent had one single audio dropout or video screwup otherwise, except for the small pauses during layer changes. And if done right, the studio puts a layer change in between scene changes and it isn't too noticeable. it's only a fraction of a second anyway, and almost all DVD players have a short little hiccup during layer changes.

I just bought this DVD player 2 days ago (1/25/01) for $75 at a clearance store!! I think this is the best deal that I ever got in my life. This DVD Player has all of the right hardware features, namely the Composite/S-Video/Component Video switches, the 3d Spatializer (which makes my CRAPPY Surround Sound system sound like a true home theater) and the Dolby Digital 5.1 surrround sound feature. I've only watched 2 DVD's on it so far, but the SOund and Audio quality can't be matched by any other player I've heard. This system comes highly recommended by myself, and I feel so LUCKY to have found this for $75!!

I bought this DVD player. But I didn't get to make available the image in my TV. How do I do to configure this apparel (cannot I visualize their commands)? The entrance is not configured for TV. Which the shortcut for the remote control?

I am in Brazil.
Please..

A fiend of mine works for Philis, he told me the Philips/Magnavox DVD-850 is a rebranded Thoshiba, possibly Toshiba SD-3108. That player has a lot of problems with new DVD discs, so does my Philps DVD-850.
