Philips DVD-860
The decoding is not as good as Sony's. Some disk (make in Taiwan) can play properly in Sony, but has some problem in DVD-860.

Video or audio quality is ok. Just the response time is a little long when you insert a disk, it takes around 2-3 secs to identify it is VCD, CD or DVD before it can play.

Also, the remote control looks stupid and it's too big. Can be more compact.

Video and Audio quality is great, a lot of connections plus it's multinational.
Response time, when you insert a disk is a bit too long but you get used to it.
The remote is a bit boring to learn the first few times and is rather large, another addition to your already "too many remote's".

The picture is great, audio is middle class, but really good for DVD's.
The remote control unit is very big.

Sound quality is great. Obviously the quality of the components you use with DVD860 to provide the full "Digital Cinema" sound in your home will determine it's overall ability. Use the DVD860 with good/high quality components & you will be greatly rewarded. As a stand alone system it provides crisp sounds across the entire field range. (A good ear helps to determine this). The hand control unit is large, however provided all you need & more in a hand control unit. Time taken to determine if inserted disc is DVD, VCD, Music takes a little getting used to, but is bearable. Overall, this is one of the best DVD players on the market.

Very good player, but like everyone else, I would have to agree that the remote is to big.

Feature-rich, good quality for the price.
But I do have to concur, it does not play CD-R. Nor does it play region 1 DVD with 'PC Friednly' support! This is actually a surprise, as it has played all my region 1 discs in the past 3 years without any problem: except the latest one with "PC Friendly" support

I have had reasonably consistent success using CD-RW disks (Acer, Penmax & Kodak)to make VCD's on my Acer 4432 with Nero 5. Using exactly the same burn parameters, I have NEVER managed to get any brand of CDR to play! Strange really - I suggest you try various disk brand CDR/CD-RW combinations until you find one that works. I am still trying to find a SVCD combination that will play.
Does anyone know if there is an Eprom/hardware update available for this model?

I will not buy any Philips product again! My DVD player "malfunctioned" 4 months after purchases. I used it about 12 times and Philips charged me $40 for an exchange.

I expect better service that 12 uses from a DVD player.

BUYER BEWARE!! AVOID PHILIPS PRODUCTS!!!

The unit is great if used for standard DVDs from rental store.!
However, in real life we all like to play some personal collection of VCDs and DVD-R/+R and even Photo CDs.
This unit is absolute failure in even reading such formats and there seems to be no workaround to get the Firmware upgraded.

Does anyone have any answer for this issue?

You are totally right and if you have got a solution it would be great if you could help me out of that problem by sending an email to helsingor@gmx.net.
I really need more than just a DVD player who could be sponsored by DVD rental shops.
Frank
