Tested denon 3801 and integra 7.1. The Denon was a little better than the Sony ES I was upgrading from. The Integra made the high's sound tinny. The SR-19 provided a very natural sound from my Tannoys.

This 5 channel receiver is probably obsolete in light of the newest formats, e.g. EX and ES. I'm not plannng to buy more speakers for a while and most movies are still encoded with 5.1 so that is not a big concern for me. Before owning this receiver I was strictly a stereo listener so my priorities for purchasing a surround sound receiver leaned heavily toward music with less emphasis on theater. After auditioning Pioneer Elite, Sony ES and Denon offerings in it's price range I chose the Marantz for it's warm almost tube-like sound. I'm driving Paradigm Studio Reference 100's for L/R. Studio CC center & Studio ADP surrounds. The Paradigms can be a little power hungry but the amp drives them to levels that become dangerously uncomfortable before the amp begins to sound stressed (105db) I have managed to clip the amp at volumes that threatened to break windows. Bass response seems especially robust for a receiver. It approaches the quality of some middle of the road separates. The Studio 100's have a reputation for being a 'bright' sounding speaker (metal tweeter). The Marantz tames them extremely well. If you've ever listened to Infinity speakers with an Onkyo receiver you probably understand listener fatigue. I don't experience that with this combination. All in all I've been very pleased with it's performance. If there are any weaknesses in this receiver I would say it is in the tuner section. I live about 20 miles from the nearest radio broadcast antenna and the Marantz's tuner doesn't pull them in as cleanly as my old Tandberg 2 channel receiver did. Movie sound tracks are delivered with stunning realism through this receiver. Center channel voices are clear and realistic. (Neither nasal or boxy as with Sony equipment) When speaker levels are properly calibrated, the system reproduces DTS sound tracks about as good as I've ever heard. I've become a fan of multi-channel music since owning this receiver. That is something I never thought I would say. Afterall, I'm one of those who survived the quadraphonic era. The remote control delivered with this receiver is awesome! I use it to control my VHS, DVD, CD, DBS & TV
