Kenwood KR-V990D
Works great for music. But tried using it for my Toshiba 2107 for
a DVD Dolby Digtal reciever, and it was a pain in the ass. It only worked
when it wanted to. It also blew many fuses. The unit was returned and
I bought the Kenwood 1080VR instead. (Which works flawlessly!)

Stay away from this unit if you can.

List price for this item is $1000-1400, and can be found for $400 over the web.

Don't fall in for the hype that this 1996 unit is top of the line. It isn't.

6 months out of warranty finally got DVD only to find out that I paid hundreds of dollars for a defective product. AC-3 switching is faulty. Kenwood does not acknowledge this as a problem though I've seen postings on the Internet regarding this. In repair shop for over a month now. Techs look at it and are confused with all the IC's. Guess I'll pay for repairs and wait for the new receivers to drop in price. IMHO Kenwood sucks and will never get another dime from me again.

I have owned the 990D for about 2 years. I purchased just as the 1080VR and 1090VR units were coming on the market. This unit had a list price of $1200 but was selling for just over $600 when I purchased it. It does have a few problems. I had to send it back to Kenwood for the upgraded chip to recognize the AC-3 output from my DVD (Panasonic A110). The unit sounds very good (not great) in AC-3 mode. The tweeking you can do with the surround channels is somewhat limited. The unit actually sounds much better in two channel stereo where it is rated at 120W/channel. The sound volume drops about 5-6 db when switched to AC-3! Finally, the remote control is very finicky and you can not use a univeral remote with this receiver (way to go Kenwood, duh!). For the price I paid when I bought the unit, I am not dissatisfied; but I don't think I would buy another Kenwood unit again. I will probably go with a Yamaha or Onkyo.

I don't know what the other people above are talking about, but I have been the happy owner of a Kenwood kr-v990d receiver for about a year now, and I have only experienced a single mentioned problem. I have tried several DVD-players, the only one that didn't work, was the Sony. I called Kenwood, and it was possible to modify the receiver for free. The rest of the DVD-players worked perfectly with great sounding Dolby Digital. The receiver delivers loads of power and quality. I live in Holland (Europe) and this receiver has been chosen the best of 1996/1997, and I agree.

By the way, in Holland the price of this receiver hasn't reduced a single bit, and I also think that most people here have forgotten that the 990d has the best and most expensive Dolby Digital decoding chip that was ever built. Better than in Yamaha and Onkyo receivers. Maybe because the people above are discussing the Vs-model, I can't come to another conclusion. I find the comments quite strange, and furthermore I'd like to say that if one says 'this receiver is a piece of shit' and rates the receiver at '0', I personally don't take this comment seriously, because he hasn't got the faintest argument whatsoever, and besides that, it is not possible to give even the worst receiver ever sold on the market a rating as low as this one.

If you lose the remote...your screwed. Does too many things that only the remote can access. The surround sound is subpar also. I bought mine at my local AAFES when I was stationed in Germany. I was just a young private at the time and thought more money was better.....boy was I wrong...stay away from it unless you have money to waste.(P.S. .... and I'm a die hard Kenwood fan too)

Too much money for something that relies too much on a shitty remote. I got lucky and picked it up for pretty cheap ($500)....Whatever you do...do not pay full price for this hunk of shit.

Remote is atrocious. If you have no video, you have no way of setting up the system. Universal remotes do not support many of the features on this system. Other than the remote, it was a decent system for its time. Beware some DVD players are incompatible, but this is an LD-era item. Also the OSD is pretty sketchy and confusing on many of the settings. Still, the sound is nice. It's a good item for a secondary system with older components, or perhaps to power the computer room. Make sure you get a good price, though, I paid $500 5 years ago or so.

Hard to understand terminology for setting up. No comments at all on "Monitor out" I have had trouble since I bought it. One time it works fine and then you change something and nothing works.

Can't do much without the remote but this receiver rivals all the Denon, Yamaha, HK, Onkyo receivers I have owned over the years but the MSRP on this thing was a whopping 5,400 dollars! Way too much money to spend on a receiver...
