Onkyo TX-DS939
WOW!!!!! I have had the HONOR of having this monster (ALMOST 50lbs.!!!!) in my system for only a short time, but it has to be the best sounding receiver (if you can really call it just a receiver) I have ever heard. The toroidial transformer delivers gigantic amounts of power, enough to drive my rather inefficient (84db) speakers to more than listenable levels. The sound quality is smooth and liquid, not harsh and over bright as with most receivers. It is very easy to use onece you get used to the on screen menus and the remote, and set up is a breeze with the "spatial analyzer" feature. Only minor complaint, no direct 6 channel input, even tohough it does provide a full set of pre ins and outs. By the way, it also looks cool. WOW, what a piece of work.

Onkyo TX-DS939
The unit was recommended by a specialized audio (high end) but sounded too good to be true. I checked on the web to find specs and comments on it. This sold it to me. I bought it even though i was still somewhat skeptical because of the price...I have never regretted this purchase after 6 months of listenig to music, DVD's, CD's, the works...This unit is trully amazing for it's sound, versatility, number of inputs, etc,etc,etc...I have never heard any HISS that some people complained about in my search on the web, even at extremely loud volumes. This unit deserves the best rating as so many professionals agreed.

Onkyo TX-DS939
This unit has met my every expectation. The performance in my system has been flawless. Listening to Dolby Digital has been a revelation. The flexibility of being able to view one audio source while taping another has been great. I really appreciated the automatic setup for the surround system. It was vey accurate, needing only the distance to the sub to be adjusted.

It also looks great, I love being able to turn the display down or off while viewing a movie.

The only negative comments I have after 3 months of ownership are:

1) This puppy runs hot! Even at low levels or with no input. Make certain that you don't stack anything on it or restrict its ventilation.

B) The remote doesn't learn commands from my VCR's remote and doesn't learn all of the DVD' remotes commands.

Since I paid nearly $1000 less than list for it, I'm very happy with the value as well as the performance.

Onkyo TX-DS939
Outstanding! I am difficult to please, having used separates for years, including Acurus amps, and also PSB Stratus Gold speakers. Moved the separates to a music only system in another room, and thought I may be a bit disappointed in my new Onkyo TX-DS939 Receiver for music listening. Boy was I wrong! This thing sounds fantastic and has no problem driving my speakers. The large torroidal transformer provides plenty of power. Great imaging, great dynamics, and well controlled bass. Highly recommended! And that's just for music! For movies...no contest! Exceptional!

Onkyo TX-DS939
Bought my 939 a year ago & love it. May not have as much gadgetry but watt for watt blows the DSP-A1 away (146 vs 110 all channels driven). I chose the 939 over the DSP-A3090 back then and can't believe the DSP-A1 still lacks the Onkyo so much in power. So far the loudest I've played the cool running Onkyo through my Definitive Technology BP2000TL system is at 0 db. Definitely the best & cleanest sounding receiver challenging some component amplifiers in performance. Automatic speaker adjustment works great with more than enough DSP mode for me to play with.

Onkyo TX-DS939
Bought mine from Shop4 about eight months ago for less than $1900 delivered. I was very pleased with the timeliness and condition of unit on arrival.

Plenty of power. Took back 2 top model Yamaha's that would not drive my ESS AMT 1b speakers (old but they still sound great). The 939 has no problem driving them and two more mid size Klipsh I use for rears. Plenty of base driving Paradigm sub and no detectable distortion anywhere at the 2/3 point on Vol control, but the house shakes!

The a/v qualities are great. Unit can be custom programed for each surround mode adjusting for such as delay front to rear and more. No DVD yet (next addition) but for VCR movies the sound and listening experience is awesome. Ordinary TV viewing even sounds great with surround modes.

You can use it to operate A/V in another room with a different source. Dub a VCR or audio tape while watching TV.

Downside - the remote sucks but works dependably. Unit definitely runs hot even at low power loads but built in cooling fan comes on with high power demands. This unit sets in a cabinet and door must be left open when running.

In summary this unit is well built and behaves like a Mercedes. Lots of bells and whistles, very good a/v and cd/tape performance. FM tuner is very good but no auto set up as with Yamaha (best FM tuner). Expensive but worth it. I would not hesitate to reccomend it to anyone that appreciates the best.

Onkyo TX-DS939
Very Good Audio Quality, Very comfortable on-screen display, Very useful Multi Room capability.
Bottom Line: They thought almost on everything should be in an A/V receiver.

Onkyo TX-DS939
I had one for a few weeks and was truly impressed by its raw, clean power. However, on my unit, the standard modes of Dobly Digital and Pro Logic (without THX) produced hiss that would increase then go away, increase then go away repeatedly as the volume was slowly increased. Each channel seemed to have a different DB level where the hiss dissappeared. Also, I noticed crosstalk between the video signal and the audio channels (center mostly) where if the video signal included text (movie titles, menus, etc.) the audio produced a buzz that was very noticable without THX but still present even with THX. (Yes, it was from the receiver, not the audio/video source.)

I hope that the unit I had was defective, but the other unit at the store had the same problem. If anyone knows more about this phenomenon, I would like to hear from you...can it be solved, or is it a design issue?

Overall, I liked the features and capabilities. It would be the centerpiece of my system except for the hiss/buzz issue.

Onkyo TX-DS939
To all owners of Onkyo TX-DS939 or A-DS939 Integra (Here in Japan)
if the temperature goes too high and the fans inside the unit do not turn on...
Have the unit modified ASAP!
I bought a receiver and it burnt after watching 2 movies..
So I went back to the shop and changed it straight away.
I bought a digital thermometer to check the functioning of the Cooling system
and yet it would go up to over 70C and fans would not run.
I called Onkyo service and they did tell me that there is a manufacturing problem and that the fans do not always turn on...and this could be dramatic for the board above the Power amplifier section...!
If your unit is has fans always runing (since power up) that means that it already has been modified...

Non the less ....It's a great piece of equipment and I don't regret buying it...

Any questions? I can be reached at : jariten@gol.com

Happy viewing!

Onkyo TX-DS939
Is there a difference between a TX-DS939 and a TX-DS939(B). I purchased the TX-DS939(B) October 8, 1999 in Okinawa, Japan. Unit didn't work, turned it in for repair, got the unit back on 21 Dec 99, this unit has very clean sound, but as soon as the volume is turned to -14db the unit switches to "PROTECT" mode, back to the repair for this unit. I've been a Onkyo fan since the 80's, but this experience has shaken my confidence in Onkyo equipment. I requested a replacement unit, Onkyo of Japan(Osaka) refuse to replace it, I'm sure I'd get better customer service in the great U.S. of A, the price a soldier has to pay for living overseas. sound quality: 10, reliability: -15, other features: haven't owned it long enough to rate....I'm using this unit with Klipsch KM-6 speakers(150 watt continuous, 400 watts peak)
