Denon AVD-2000
Excellent value for an external Dolby Digital decoder.

It seems to have better depth and dynamics than my outboard Rotel D/A convertor.

This unit is certainly not lacking in features: four(!) AC-3/SPDIF inputs, full-function remote, Cinema EQ (which is functionally the same as Lucasfilm's Cinema Re-EQ), and proprietary surround modes.

One of the features that I found most attractive was the 6-channel External Input for, say, a DTS decoder; the icing on the cake is being able to apply the Cinema Equalization for that Input.

In addition, this DD decoder is very flexible and fully featured with a 4-setting Dynamic Compressor and bass manangement.

I found adjusting the parameters a little confusing at first, but it is just a matter of getting used to it. I especially like being to make changes with the remote WITHOUT having to use a TV monitor for onscreen display, as in my Onkyo 919 THX receiver.

You may not use some of Denon's DSP surround modes, but they certainly fun to play with. I found the "Matrix" mode most useful for music and TV (DSS).

My one and only reservation is that the Dialog Normalization (DN) defaults back to "ON" when you turn the AVD-2000 on. From my experience, I found that DN makes the center channel too loud relative to the other channels and I thnik this ruins the soundtrack mix, i.e., the soundtrack does not sound the same as when the sound designer made it.

BUT that is a very minor thing, and it can easily be changed from the remote.

Of all the external DD decoders on the market there was only one that I found that met my needs and was seriously considering--the Parasound P/DD-1500. But Denon did it better by adding a 6-channel input, and it's priced more reasonably (about $600, the Parasound retails for approximately $1000).

The Onkyo ED-901 had only one Dolby Digital input, plus another one for AC-3 RF; I have always thought that this was a mistake. What about inputs for future technologies, such as HDTV? (Yes, I know, you can get MSB's Digital Director, but that is cumbersome and it is ends up being more costly.) I'm glad that I waited.

Overall and for the price, the Denon AVD-2000 is an excellent product. Highly recommended!

Denon AVD-2000
Excellent AC-3 sound that comes from Denon quality. Has built-in Lucas Cinema Re-EQ circuit to smooth out the sound. It has more coaxial and optical inputs than most decoders. The Denon is also a very good sounding 20-bit D/A converter for PCM digital input. Great value.

Denon AVD-2000
The BEST AC-3 Decoding I have ever heard.... The Dynamics are very lound and the steering of the informaion is very exact... The quality is so so so good..

I would never part from this baby....

Also, the prologic decoders from denon that use and original analog chip, (DDSC) sound just as dynamic as AC-3... Denon sure knows it's stufff

Denon AVD-2000
Excellent decoder for the $. I bought this for $199 at Tweeter Etc. , and have laughed all the way to a great sounding home theater. The rest of the system includes the Harman Kardon PA 5800 amp, HK PT 2500 preamp, Toshiba 2108 DVD (no drop outs yet), PSB Century speakers (600i, 300i, 200i). I have to say this is the best I could find for my budget of $2000.
As for the decoder, I find the capabilities up to snuff with any of the top decoders built (internal or external). The 6 channel input is a definite plus, and the 5 channel stereo is good for quiet backround music during parties, or quiet times. As for the other sound fields, I am not a fan of any echo effects, and so I don't play with them.
For Dolby Digital and 5 channel stereo it is a very solid unit.
Top rating for this fine piece of mid fi

Denon AVD-2000
I have been predisposed to buying Yamaha products in the past. I have a Yamaha DSP-A2070 (Dolby pro-logic predecessor to the DSP-A1) and a Yamaha DSP-E492 (this makes my A2070 upgradeable to DD/DTS). I spent a month shopping for a Dolby Digital/DTS decoder before I bought the Denon AVD2000. I am ecstatic that I waited and bought this unit (175 at UBID.COM). This unit is worth 3 times the price I paid for it

Build quality = 10
This unit is solid and immediately after taking out of the box you will realize that Denon did not skimp on this unit

Features = 20
I have to give this double the rating on features. You can program the distance you sit from the speakers, control the volume of each speaker and the sub separately, choose the size of the speakers, dialog normalization, cinema equalization to tame bright movie soundtracks etc, etc.

Performance = 20
Boy does this unit perform! I will pay attention to Denon products in the future after buying this baby. This unit automatically chooses the broadcast of source material i.e. Dolby Digital or Pro-Logic. Some units have problems recognizing the DVD signal and you have to manually chose Dolby Digital or Pro-Logic ala Technics SHAC500d

To make a long story short, this unit is excellent. I would rather have an excellent Dolby Digital unit than a decent DD/DTS unit.

Denon AVD-2000
I got mine in Feb. '98 and paid $400, reasonable considering it had only been on the market for a month or two. I intended to buy the Sony EP9ES but found the Denon to be as good in terms of sound and build quality with more useful features than the Sony. The fact that it was nearly $300 cheaper wasn't a huge factor (though it certainly didn't hurt), it's just that the Sony didn't offer anything important to me that the Denon lacked. The 20-bit Burr-Brown DACs make my $250 CD changer sound as good as most $2,000 CD players I've heard, and the "Matrix" DSP mode is outstanding. I kind of like the small remote but because of the shape it is easy to grab it upside down by touch alone. This is not a problem for me because I have the Marantz RC2000 Mk. II remote now. It does get fairly hot even when it is just on and no signal is fed to it. I had to rearrange the components in my equipment rack for fear of melting the processor. I think it is still the best bang for the buck digital pre/pro available, and no excuse needs to be made for its sound, even in a high dollar high-end system.

Denon AVD-2000
I use this piece as a DD decoder matched with the Denon 2400 and am fully impressed with its performance. To tell you how many things this unit can do, I have one input for DVD, one for CD, one for laserdisc (RF), and one for computer. Yes, believe it or not, I have a SoundBlaster Live sending a SPDIF signal to the decoder. The sound is unbelievable!

Denon AVD-2000
I am glad that I bought a AVD-2000 DD decoder.I bought it for the amount of $129.00 with three years of extended warranty. My system is made up of a Yamaha RXV-2090 DD ready receiver, a DDP-2 DD decoder which I got rid of when I bought the Dennon AVD-2000, A-300 Panasonic DVD player,a Dennon DCM-460 CD player with analogs and coaxial digital output. I use both outputs to compare the sound, and I can hear a big difference. I was blown away by the sound.

Sorry to use this forum
But I am looking to buy the Denon AVD-2000, searched on yahoo page, and found this rating votes.
Just a question to one of the reviewers (dunno his/her name, just the IP address:208.204.96.18 ) that mentioned that the unit was bought for $129!
Mind telling me where you get it from? (especially if it is in CA, or L.A. vicinities)
Thanks... anybody who knows how to get a new one cheap (or a refurb with 1 yr or better warranty), please let me know at monitor4sale@post.com

Denon AVD-2000
It took me some time before i bought this unit, i really researched for the best ac3 decoder on market, and i found that this unit has all the inputs and outputs that i need for the future, compared to other decoders that is already obsolete for they do not have that 6 channel analog inputs... and aside from that, the unit performs terribly well! I matched my denon avd2000 to my yamaha rxv592...
so to anyone planning to upgrade their system to ac3, you can never go wrong with this one...DTS..? I really don't care for they don't have that many dvds on market anyways, but still if you decide to upgrade to dts, just plug it in the denon...!
