Celestron C8 SP
Optically excellent, though the 6x30 finder is best upgraded. The only downside I have found has been the SP mount. It is finicky in adjustment, with a bit of wobble. Supposedly the newer GP mounts have been beefed up.

The SP-C8 is an outstanding combination. I owned one back in the mid 80's and sold it. After trying a fork mounted 8in Cat, I sold it and returned to the SP-C8. The Super Polaris mount is fantastic. Solid and without backlash or slop. Quick and easy polar alignment and the first rate Vixen dual motors provide highly accurate tracking. The current CG-5 mount is not even close. Optics on both of my SP-C8s were very good. Replace the little finder with a Telrad and add motor focus and you will be a happy camper. If you run across one of these units on the used market, give it a good look.

MADE IN 1986 .EXCELLENT MOUNT. POOR OPTICS EVEN PERFECTLY COLLIMATED. DIFFRACTION SHOWED SPHERICAL ABBERATION, ROUGHNESS AND A STRONG ZONE. VERY POOR PLANETARY IMAGES. TEST IT BEFORE YOU BUY IT.

I feel this is an excellent scope. The mount is solid and the polar alignment scope make all the difference in the world. No star hopping needed just use the RA and declination circles on the mount. My scopes optics are perfect given enough cool down time and a steady sky. It has enough aperture to offer great views of many deep sky objects as well as planets and the moon. Its short tube and strap make it very portable. I use a JMI Mototrack IV which works fine with this mount. For wider field views I use a Celestron focal reducer hich makes it a f/6.3 scope. When I bring it to club observation sessions compliments about the scope abound. The only problem I have is dew. I use an Orion Flex Cap but eventually even it can hold off the dew.

A lot better scope out of the factory than what we see going on with poor old Meade which has no quality control what-so-ever.

Mine was made in 1986 and the optics were poor. With perfect collimation it still showed a zone 70% out from center and star tests also showed roughness. Try before you buy.

I purchased my Spc8 in 1991 with the Super Polaris Mount.

The mount holds the OTA very well. The Polar Alignment scope is very easy to use, aligning takes no more than 5 minutes.

The optics on my sample proved to be VERY good. This was my first "serious" scope and I was very pleased to hear from some of the veteran observers in our club that this was an excellent sample of very good C8 optics.

The scope came with a 30mm Ultima Plossl and a good mirror diagonal. I have been advised to hold on to the diagonal as the more recent C8's now have diagonals that are made in China and are not as good as the original (supplied) Japanese diagonals.

I have used this scope extensively, locating all the Messiers dozens and dozens of NGC's and many Herchel objects.

I have seen these on the used market for very reasonable prices. I have nothing negative to say about this scope as it has served me very well for many years and it still performs like new.

If pressed my only comment would be that the dual-axis controller/drives should have been offered as standard equipment, with a reasonable price increase however.

Excellent scope, Excellent value.

Mine is mounted on a Skywatcher EQ5 mount but it is a perfect combination nonetheless.
