One of these was givin to me as a gift as my first scope. Optically they can be made to actually be pretty good but the mount is flimsy and difficult to use, It needs a fine adjuster for azimuth. To be at it's best it needs new eyepieces and the inside of the focuser drawtube painted black. The finder needs to go too, I replaced mine with a decent 6X30 finder mounted in a bracket you can actually adjust. The stock 90 deg. diagonal allows the use of 1.25" eyepieces if you pull out the adapter ring. The star test on mine shows excellent optics, I guess its hard to screw up an F/11.7 refractor. Unfortunatly at it's best it's still only a 60mm scope on a crappy mount. It is probably best used as a guide scope with the OTA mounted on a better instrument. For a first scope buy a 6" F/8 Dob and be happy.

Scopes like this are pure junk. If you can buy it at walmart,kmart,etc.etc. consider it junk, This was actually my first scope when I was 13 years old, it killed my interest in astronomy for about 15 years, only when I got older and took the plunge by getting a good scope(takahashi) did I realize what amateur astronomy is all about. If all you want to look at is the moon, then this scope will be fine, otherwise, spend a little extra and get something you can enjoy for a long time.

Unfortunantly, a lot of people don't allow to test the scopes themselves, and just join the 'group' of people who stereotype any scope put out by tasco, etc as a load of rubbish.
This is not true.
One person said he got it for his 13th birthday and that was 15 years ago, HELLO, they have come on since 1973.
I have bought this scope and 2 other Tasco's, and I have never had any trouble with them, in fact they outperform for their aperture range.
The 302048, 302058, and 302003 all work extremely well for their price range on the moon and planets and deep sky objects.
On Jupiter, all 3 scopes clearly show a bright, clear image at 150 X - 175X with 4 coloured cloud belts and 6 moons visible.
The scopes are all optically and mechanically of very good quality, and for the beginner observing close ups of the moon like in low lunar orbit, the planets Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn, double stars, and bright deep sky objects, the scopes work well.
Upgrading to higher quality eyepieces is an advantage, and the difference is remarkable.
Overall, when used at powers no more than 150 X to 175X for moon and planets, and around 35 X for deep sky, the scopes are fine, and a reasonable introduction at an affordable price.

Definately for the price, it's a fine scope. I hope no one listens to the moron who claimed that this was his first scope 15 years ago- for the money, it's a fine scope. Seeing the rings of Saturn is worth 90 bucks alone.

This scope was given to me as a Christmas present in 1985 (aged 15) and at the time I was chuffed to bits. Earlier that year I had blown all my summer money on a pair of binoculars as recommended in all "For beginners" astronomy books. Now those bino's almost killed my interest. Planets looked like stars and the Moon was no bigger than naked eye. When your just starting out and not sure what to expect, this was a massive let down. However unlike one of the previous reviews, this scope increased my interest in astronomy. When your new to astronomy, all you want to see is the Moon and Planets and one of these scopes are much better value than a good pair of binoculars.
btw - I still have those Swift binoclurs

Indeed it is a good value for what it sells for. I got one as a gift, and at my age, I loved just seeing the moon up close. However, the tripod and mount were very flimsy and frustrating to work with. I would not recomend it for a starter scope due to the lack of ease of use.

tasco, bushnell, anything at walmart, kmart etc. etc. they are all just plain worthless. Do yourself a favor, go to a retailer of fine optics and spend a little more. The payoff will be worth it.

It's 69 frikin Dollars. ( fricken is a expression, not a monetary denomination)
What do you want for $69, the moon! Cry babies. Well you get that and
I saw Rings on Saturn, The GRS on Jupiter, and craters on the moon. Some Nebuluas stuff, Just don't push past 50x. Leave outside all the time for no cool down, great for sun spots. Losers!

Ok heres the deal. So what if the other guy's honkin scope blows this one away. The fact is that while theirs wasn't worth haulin out during a cloudy night mine was. So I got to see Saturn and it's rings as it reappeared from behind the moon. I saw the Orion Nebula, Jupiter and 4 of it's moons. I then moved on to the Pleades and the Hyades. All this enjoyment from my backyard while the other guy's wasn't worth haulin out. But like the books say... over 400x power on a 60mm scope is absurd. Keep it a 50x or under and it makes a great little scope for it's price. What do you expect for 80 bucks Canadian "EH". Maybe I just got lucky!! Yes I'm looking for another one with bigger aperature because now I'm hooked and want to see more and more and more. So how big is big enough? I guess my pocket book will determine that!! A 60mm aperature is not enough for me anymore!!

This scope must have killed the enthusiasm of so many novice astronomers, Tasco and their dealers should shot for allowing this rubbish on the market. If this is all you can afford,go out and buy a pair of binoculars, they will give you infinate more pleasure. Rob Mc Ginley UK

With little improvementi it's a good scope (same good pattern outside focus in and out with very little aber spher): better eyepieces( ortho), better bafling, carton black inside de eyepiece holder...
Better contrast that Vixen 60mmf7 and Vixen 70mmf6
and far better that Meade ETX60mm/70mm AT
It go easy to 120x -150x
A excellent guiding scope for very not much money
It s true that the novice will be dissap.
