Celestron C5+
Finest easily portable scope I've used with a very accurate RA drive. Extrordinary light gathering ability for a 5" scope. I'm looking forward to some great photos of next year's full solar eclipse.

My Qualifications - beginner (1+ years); some astrophotography; 2nd scope.
C5+ Comments - Came well-packaged and with an excellent 66 page manual. Initial set-up was quick, except for the DEC drive which required some re-engineering to get it to fit. This, plus the fact that the finder scope was way out of focus are my only two beefs against the scope (both problems now fixed). Very easy and fun to use for viewing and astrophotography. Nice views of Jupiter and Saturn, disappointing views (so far) of Andromeda. Nice view of M5. (all from suburban skies on nights where I can barely make out MW).

My sample did not have great optics, just decent. ETX had more contrast on Planets and Moon.

I borrowed one from a local telescope store. The optical performance was extraordinary. I finally settled on a larger scope since the extra light gathering power was a prime consideration. Some day I'd like a C5+ since a light, compact and portable scope is also high on my list and many accessories from my C8 will work well with it.

I have been a amatuer astronomer for over 30 years. This is without a doubt, the finest small SCT I have ever peered through. I evaluated one from a local telescope store and the optics were stunning. Saturn and it's rings stood out in crisp relief; contrast was striking with ring detail easily seen and a very evident ring shadow cast on the planet. The primary reason I didn't opt for the C5+ was a limit on finances,and my primary criteron was for more light grasp--so I went with a larger SCT (Celestron C8 Deluxe)which I am very pleased with. If portability is a primary consideration, I would certainly go with a C5+.

In my experience, no scope beats this one for the highest performance given its portability. I have 4 scopes and this far and away gets used the most.

I have the spotting scope version which I have mounted on a HD Bogen tripod with a gear-driven head and I love it. First light on Saturn and Jupiter thru this little beauty left me nearly catatonic with joy. I've run it up to 125x in average seeing and the planetary performance is great. Stars are pinpoints. Not the best scope for deep space because of the small aperture but it works well enough (and you CAN take it with you to remote dark sky sights without having to hire a platoon of porters). Limited to 1.25" eyepieces because of the small aperture of the visual back. Yes I have larger scopes but this is the most FUN telescope I use.

Daytime terrestrial performance is amazing. I live on one side of a valley and looking 2.5 miles across I could easily read a 2' x 3' political campaign sign. I use a 1.25" star diagonal for astro viewing and a 45* upright image diag. for terrestrial. IMHO, the best small SCT ever made.

I've had this scope for just about three weeks and in that time I've used it more than I did my 8" Dob. or 4" refractor all last year. This scope is so light and compact that I use it almost every clear night. I can pick up the scope in one hand and my accessory case in the other and be outside observing in less that two minutes. The star test on my unit was fabulous, with a well defined Airy disc and diffraction rings. And the factory collimation was dead accurate. The r.a drive tracked very well and kept each object smack in the center of the field throughout the time it was being observed. Images are bright, sharp and with more contrast than you usually expect from a Schmidt-Cassegrain. What else can I say? This is fantastic scope for anyone wanting a portable scope with great optics. And, as I understand things, Celestron has discontinued production of the C5+, so you should be able to get a good deal on those that remain. If you find one, buy it - you won't be sorry.

Very pleased with the performance of all aspects of this scope considering the size and weight. I cannot imagine ANY scope that could be as portable and easy to transport, quick to set up and pleasant use as the C5+. I am sure that some of the larger scopes can out perform the C5, but for my money it is the Best in its class.

My first "real" telescope. Portability was paramount (I live on the 3rd flr of a condo in a light polluted Southern CA city) and have already taken it to Arizona where it performed great. It's all metal and without all the computerized stuff (that can breakdown). I am glad I didn't hold out for the ETX-125EC/NexStar 5.
I will get a larger SCT eventually, but this one will suit me just fine.

An astronomy friend reviewed my C5+ and commented that I had a wonderful telescope. I was flattered at his comments considering he generally prefers other designs over the SCT.

This is my first real telescope. It has given me great enjoyment and performs very well from light polluted urban skies with bright images on planets and many deep space objects and very good star tests although a bit undercorrected I think. The motor works great and the mount is really stable, dampening down from a sharp rap in under a second. This is an extremely versatile rig as the scope can be mounted on a field tripod, used with wedge only on a table, used without the wedge in alt-az mode which can be fun, or removed from the fork mount and matched with a camera tripod for use as a spotting scope. While I plan to get one or two bigger scopes once I move to the burbs, this one will definitely remain my choice for quick setups and for travel. Highly recommended if you can still find a dealer that stocks them.

Excellent optical performance. Perfect diffraction pattern. Excellent resolution and brightness. Decent contrast considering size of secondary mirror. Good mount and tracking for visual use. Only marginally useful for astrophotography.

This is my first telescope, though I have used my dad's C-8 a few times over the years. I purchased the C5+ just after Christmas 1999, after it had been discontinued in favor of the Nexstar. As a result, I saved $400 over the mid-1999 price. I chose the C5+ for both day-time and night-time use. The fact that the optical tube can be removed from the mount was very important to me. Try that with an ETX or Nexstar. Also, I figured it would be easier to learn the craft better on a manual scope than a computerized one.

The optics on my scope are excellent, and several people in my local astronomy club (all with much larger scopes) have commented on the quality of my C5+. A couple of people have even asked if I knew where others could be found since the portability for "quick and dirty" viewing can't be beat. I have taken some fine photos of the moon, but haven't yet tried anything more amibitious. I will eventually move up to a larger scope for better deep-sky views, but for now the C5+ is perfect.

I´m a long time user of a C5 spotter, which I later upgraded to a Astronomical Telescope (with New Polaris EQ Mount).
Since 1996 (when I purchased it as used), whenever I look through it, I enjoy it.
If portability, usage for birding, stargazing and even as telephoto lens - the C5 would be my first recommendation.
Had the chance, to look through several comparables in size and price - I never would change it because of its quality in all respects.

Great all-around scope. It's very portable, easy to set up, gives great views. Only drawback is it tends to dew easily... needs a dew shield.
