Celestron C4.5
Very solid mount with smooth slow motion controls. Legs are not adjustable.
Optics are very sharp, Included eyepiece is high quality plossl.
Disassembles easily for transport.

This is a great entry-level scope. It was my first scope and I still enjoy it. The optics and mount are the best that I've seen in a 4.5" reflector. The 112mm aperture is noticeably more bright than the 90mm of the ETX. I think that the added 22mm is useful for beginning observers who haven't optimized their viewing technique.

The finder 5X24 is not very good. I added a Telrad which has helped alot. The Single axis motor drive is good and improves its usablility. The mount is short and makes some view angles akward. My advice is get a APO Refractor.

A bit expensive for a 4.5" but a very good telescope. The best 4.5" I've seen, as most reflectors of this size are entry-level and do not include the good things this one does, like an awesome mount. My advise, buy it if you have the money! Personally I bought mine after raisingthe money in a garage sale.

Excellent 1st Scope. Very solid mount. Sharp optics. This little scope is a joy to use. The only thing that I dislike is the tube rings wich are permanently attached to the OTA.

This is my first scope. The best feature is the mount, which is more than adequate. The finder is not much to brag about, but Ok for a scope in this price range.

This Celestron/Vixen Newtonian is an excellent production unit. I purchased it for the Polaris mount, but was quickly taken by the quality of the optics. The original price of this combo was about $600.00. This is a very high price for a 4.5 Newt, however after receiving the unit, I began to understand why the price was so high. Everything from the first rate focuser to the primary cell is of outstanding quality. The Polaris mount is perhaps the best in its class. There is no comparison between the Vixen Polaris mount and the current run of mounts made in China (EQ3, CG4 etc.) The Polaris is fully adjustable on both axis for tension and backlash, silky smooth motion. As stated earlier, the optics are bright and very well figured. My first light was a quick look at Jupiter. Image was sharp and banding very distinct. Although Jupiter was low in the Western sky, the image was quite pleasing. Then I moved the scope up to the first quarter moon. I was stunned. This was some of the best views of the Moon I can recall. Sharp, colorless, and showing contrast similar to a top notch refractor. There are a couple of items that keep me from rating this as a solid 10. First is the solid pinch type rings. Hard to use and rotate the scope for eyepiece location. I replaced them with hinged rings and it was much better. Next is the solid non-adjustable legs. A bit low for many positions. The finder scope would be an issue if I ever used an optical finder. I put a rigel on it and it works great. If you run across one of these on the used market you might want to take a second look.

Do not own one of these scopes but have used one recently. I currently own the TAL 1M (4.3" Reflector) a russian built telescope. Forget about the celestron and go for a TAL 1M, the celestron features are laughable in comparison with the russian equivilant. Also the TAL will set you back alot less money. The TAL also has a whole host of quality accessories to get you started in this great hobby, and bear in mind all these accessories are provided with the scope when you purchase it at no extra cost unlike some american built telescopes!
Rock steady pedastal mount, quailty german equatorial mount with clock drive, 2 eyepieces included (25mm & 15mm) plus a 3x barlow, camera adapter, all steel construction, i could go on... the TAL 1m beats this telescope hands down.
Anyone out there looking for a first scope buy the TAL, you'll be glad you did.

I've owned this little Newtonian since 1992 and it's been my "grab and go" backyard scope in all that time. It's great for lunar and planetary views. The optics are decent and the mount (Vixen Polaris) is excellent. Not good for deep space from my light polluted neighborhood, but does well in a dark sky environment, within the limitations of its aperture. Sadly, this model is no longer produced, but is a real find if it comes up on the used market.

A great little scope that has served me well since 1990. I even just "RoboScoped" it it by adding Meade DS motors and an AutoStar 497 controller. works well with a Meade DSI CCD camera too.
