This scope provides superb performance and IS a true APO! It is the best in its class. Many who have viewed through my FS78 have asked if it was a 102mm due to the impressive images (even with cheap eyepieces). The focuser is "buttery-smooth" and the workmanship is top-notch in the Japanese tradition of quality. The design is conservative and looks like a professional-grade instrument (which it is, although the pros often use these as finderscopes for their bigger workhorse instruments).

Overall a 10+ in my book. I would never hesitate to buy another and am upgrading to a larger FS102 Takahashi. Once you use a Tak, you'll never want to use anything else.

I was totally blown away with the lunar views. Copernicus was totally gob-smacking. I don't think I've said "Wow" so many times in one session! Same with Jupiter and Saturn. It was mind-blowing. This beauty just doesn't realise it's only a 3-incher!
Very solid and aestheticaly pleasing construction. Great focuser with lock-down for photography. The image just snaps into focus, no doubt about it. A manhole cover for a lens-cap. Mine came with a superb illuminated 10 x 50 finder. I really love this guy. (My other 'scope is a 10" LX200). I use the vari-extender for high powered views of the moon and planets and have taken it over 300X with no image degradation. The FS-78 gives delightful widefield views of deepsky objects and open star fields; the double cluster is beautiful and I was amazed at the quality of globular clusters such as M13 resolving so well.
I'm using mine on an EM-2 mount on a very stable wooden tripod. Power comes from a handy battery pack. The mount has a great polar scope which does a suprisingly good job although I often tend to drift align, just habit. The tracking is very accurate and smooth. If you want CCD autoguiding go for the EM-10 or an AP400 GTO. I keep my setup in the boot and can setup quickly for viewing if I'm travelling and hit dark skies. I highly recommend the FS-78. I'm looking forward to comparing its performance to an AP Traveller someday.

This is a true apo, in or out of focus - the only color comes from atmospheric effects. Unfortunately, this was my first real scope, so it set a high standard for anything that followed. Pinpoint stars, easy splits of close doubles at low power, nice planetary and exceptionally beautiful Lunar views thanks to the great contrast. The only limits on this scope are the objective diameter and the relatively large physical size which make it less easily airline portable. Nice terrestrial scope, but too expensive and delicate for field work. There's a significant gain in observing capability when moving up to the FS-102, but it's just a matter of optical physics and budget.

I have used many telescopes and this one performs with the best of them. It is truly apochromatic, I have never had false color problems of any kind and the images are superb. I have had a chance to look through several of these and they were all excellent. The mechanicals and finish are also first rate.

LOVE the scope! Incredibly portable and easy to mount on a standard photo tripod. (Flip the tube ring upside down and use the piggyback screw-tap to mount! Tap in another one for even more secure hold. Use Bogen slo-mo head to complete system.) Beyond that, breathtaking images of planets, moons, deep-sky, and terrestrial. On planets, actually prefer this one to my well-collimated, cooled-down 9.25-inch Schmidt--also an outstanding performer. FS-78 has limited light-grasp, obviously, but the difference between it and a 4-inch apo are small enough to make this scope worth it if budget is a concern. Lack of accessories included in OTA purchase shouldn't faze folks who already have eyepieces and diagonals, etc. Sure, it isn't a 7-inch APO, but its certainly a 10 in its class.

This scope will make you re-think the size issue. 3 inches can be superb if well made, and the 3" Tak fluorites are EXTREMELY well made. One of the best choices for the urban bound astronomer (many of us). Planetary/lunar images and bright deep sky are awe-inspiring in this scope. You won't believe it!

the FS78 is an excellent three inch scope. the views through it were especially pleasing owing to the very good contrast and sharpness. I can't remember any scope that could deliver as black of a background as this one can, however this is partially owing to the small aperature. I found it could outdo other telescopes in its size class in color correction and sharpness. the only minor drawbacks that this scope is a bit long (about 30 inches) and lacks in-focus making it difficult to use some eyepieces without some juggling of adapters and extension tubes. the mechanics were excellent. I place the weight of the rating on the optics though, which were perfect.
