Meade LX200 8"
Finding things in the sky right on target, good optics, and even remote software control. What more could you ask for. Would like a bigger aperture, but can't stand the back strain.

my 8" LX200 is a great telescope, but tonight the computer went haywire. The screen is reading "no circuit board." The goto isn't working and the screen says if problem persists send back to factory. Has anypone encountered this type of problem?

How is your scope now? Any problems with the goto. My telescope's goto isn't working , I guess I have to send it back to the factory, It's only 3 months old! Opt5ics on the other hand is great. Saturn with a Televue 9mm was superb with a wide F.O.V. but to tell you the truth, the 7mm ortho was even sharper. Even if the electronics cr4ap out you still can use the scope manually. I use a Telrad-

Meade LX200 8"
Optics fair. Mine had BAD collimation and some astigmatism. The computer GOTO function is cute - but NOISY. I also find the cost to get the current ROMs which fixes a lot of the problems in the early models to be way out of line. I can see some charge, but $600?!?! No way.

Meade LX200 8"
Light enough to be carried to the site, great optics. Fork mount and all mechanical constructions are sound and sturdy. The focus and dials are smooth. The GOTO function and the computer interface is easy to use and very accurate. Highly recommended for a very reasonable price.

Meade LX200 8"
the scope gives a bright airy disc, followed by bright inner ring and dimmer outer ring. the mechanics of the go-to system are amazing, and with a good initial 2 star alignment, I can routinely put objects in field of 6.7 ultrawide lens. Tracking is also excellent. brightness, i can't really judge in comparison to another scope. for planets I usually use 225 to 300x on good nights and have very clear high definition views of mars, saturn, or jupiter. These views comnpare favorably with other scopes I have tried at star parties.

Meade LX200 8"
Our seeing is generally too poor to perform an adequate star test, but in general I'm satisfied with the optics. I've owned this LX200 since 1992; the dec motor died long ago (actually, it kept running, and would not stop) and since Meade wants $500 to replace the whole electronics package, I've been using it without a drive since 1995. This is the downside of fancy computerized scopes - if they fail, you don't even have a simple clock drive. Many other problems - something's binding within the dec bearing housing, the mirror has lots of image shift when reversing direction of focusing, etc.

Surperb optics plus an excellent object library make this telescope an excellent scope for all users. The LX200 can grow with you... I started using it for visual, then entered astrophotography, and now I am using it for CCD work. The tracking and goto object centering work well even if you perform a quick allignment. The setup is solid and rock steady.

Meade LX200 8"
Great scope for the used price of $1,800 I paid. Has some mirror shift and IS noisey when slewing at fast speed. Tracks and gotos very accurate. Very stable tripod, easy setup and aligning.

Meade LX200 8"
Quite happy with the scope. Informal star test showed quite acceptable images. Brightness is good having bagged both the N.American and Veil nebs in OK skies. Motor and goto are awesome, easy to use and acurate.

Meade LX200 8"
Star test showed very good-excellent optics.Have had scope since May 98.Scope shows knots, and spiral structure in M52.Excellent double star performance! Tracking is excellent, and the go-to feature will almost center objects in a 11mm eyepiece. I dont mind the noise of the motors. The converter for battery use could be better. The mount is excellent. Overall,it is a great scope for the money. Lynn springer E-MAIL :starviewerlynn@netscape.net

Meade LX200 8"
Have had my scope since October 99 and have been very pleased. Optically, it is as good a 8" SCT as I have seen. Mechanically it's solid. I use it for both visual and AP work (avoid the STD wedge and get the Superwedge for photo work tho.)

Meade LX200 8"
THIS TELESCOPE PERFORMS VERY WELL ON BRIGHTNESS AS LONG AS YOUR AT A DARK SKY SIGHT. TRACKS VERY WELL. MIRROR SHIFT REMAINS A PROBLEM HOWEVER. MOUNT IS ROCK SOLID.

The scope performs flawlessly, I marked it down from a 10 because the manual is just average and it should now have updatable features like the ETX autostar.

Meade LX200 8"
Excellent value for the money. This is the same mount except forks that is used in the 10" and 12" models. The mount is quite stable with the 8" scope; even in a moderate wind. Works well for photography and CCD imaging when used with a Meade Super Wedge. Optics are very good though maintaing good collimation is absolutely critical.

Optics are excellent. Tracking is good. Mechanically this scope seams to run a little rough. You have to question why Meade designed this scope to run on 18 volts DC; What a pain.

I have a LX200 8" since 1 year. Everything is a pleasure excepted the strong
magnificating of stars which is more a potatoe at X250 than stars. For planetary the view is incredible... i can remember the 3 rings of saturn a
freezing night of winter... For deepsky it's so cool !!! There is lot of contrast. Tracking and pointing system is excellent. I can't understand how meade can put such a bad finder for that kind of telescope. Last advice : use eyepieces like my Clave 12 or 30 mm with antares X3 barlow. Meade eyepieces are
quite bad in front of that kind of optic. You can ask me questions at guyot@univ-st-etienne.fr

very easy to operate, even for a novice like myself. Wish it ran on 12V, but well, nothing is perfect, right? I have enjoyed it very much.

Meade LX200 8"
Excellent, Excellent, Excellent. Just got this scope and after being frustrated with the other GOTO scopes available, this one is a dream. Worked flawlessly the first night out. All objects were centered or within 3 arc min. of the field center. Mount is solid as a rock, dampens in less than 1 second if you can get it to vibrate. I did a star test on a less than perfect night for seeing and after letting the scope cool for 1.5 hours. Results, near perfect star test with maybe the slightest over correction. Will have to wait for better seeing to do a critical star test. Factory collimation was perfect.
Stars were nice pinpoints, 5+ cloud bands and 2 festoons visible in jupiter. Saturn showed 3 bands and the casini division was easy. I went through a list of galaxies in Pieces and Pegasus from the Night Sky Observers guide and everyone was dead center. Many were at the limit of my local conditions and required averted vision. I love this goto, I would have missed many of them in my dob and it would have taken a lot longer. I recommend this scope highly so far, and can't wait for night my second night out.
