Fine optics, though flawed. Lots of high-order abberations. Mount is a mix of well-made parts and junk. The finder is useless and the motor drive is very dependant on bettery condition. Meade has apparantly tried to clone a Questar in appearance without giving enough thought to function.

Ultra portable, but not the ultimate small scope.
Optics less than perfect, noticeable spherical abberation.
Other ETX's I've looked through had much better optics.
Quality is obviously variable. Finder is useless, drive
is sloppy.

Excellent portability and optics. The clock drive from the factory is sloppy, but can be easily modified to improve tracking accuracy tremendously. The finder scope is too small and in an awkward position making it nearly impossible to polar align the scope using it alone.

Hey! I know, let's throw a telescope into a carry-on bag and fly to somewhere high and dry, like the Rockies. We'll find some ring detail and fuzzies we haven't seen before, and keep them in the finder long enough to show the folks who've gathered around the picnic table. Then tomorrow we'll hike up the pass, and watch Grizzlies play in the meadows, from a looonng way away. Maybe even snap a few shots of the cubs.
No, let's just stay at home and do optical tests and find that magic spot beside Polaris. We blew the travel budget on the Tak and your physiotherapy, remember? ;-^

Can't beat it for the price. If portability is primary concern, there is no comparison except the Questar for 5 times the price. An inexpensive Right Angle adapter kit solves most of the problems with the stock finder. Get serious, if you expect to hang several pounds of camera off the back of the unit it should come as no surprise that the little motor isn't going to hack it for R.A. The only scopes that offer better drives cost at least twice as much and are everything but portable. The etx provides clear sharp views at an excellent price. When used with a sturdy tripod like the bogen 3030 it gives easy polar alignment and fair tracking for the casual observer.

The plastic fork arms and base feel light and fragile but hold up surprisingly well.

Love the optics, but the finder is hard to use. for that price its the best there is. I just love how portable it is. first thing after buying it, you must buy some more lenses because the potential of the scope is not met with the 26P.

The optics are very nice (except for a little spherical abberation). The finder is hard to look through, especially if you are looking toward the zenith. The focal ratio is a bit high for me. I wish it was more in the ballpark of f8 instead of f14. The RA drive is adequate for viewing; I wouldn't trust it for astrophotograpy. The portability of the scope and the mount is excellent. I've had more sky-time just because I bought this convenient little scope and that's worth quite a bit in my book.

Super portable - my bomb-proof hard case with lots of room for eyepieces & filters fits in carry-on space. Optics outperform anything of similar aperature.
Finder is basically useless without a right angle modification. Right Ascension motor needs to be tweaked about as often as you change batteries (but since you already have the bottom cover off, it's not much extra effort).
Meade should really fix the finder and RA drive, even if it adds $100 to the price.
