Quantum 4
Extremely sharp optics. Diffraction pattern on both sides of focus are almost identical. Solidly built, no plastic here! Nice right angle finder that actually focuses stars to points. Smooth movements in RA & Dec even after being around for 22 years. Cool down time is long but not as bad as big brother's. Too bad this guy isn't around anymore but you can find them if you look, as I did. I've seen them advertised for US 1100. and up depending on condition. It came with built in 1.75x barlow & 16mm UO koenig.

Optics were good (rating 10? yeah, maybe... no compaints at least)
That single arm "fork," however... (rating 6)
I heard that particular 'scope ended up being "out of true" (the declination axis was not orthogonal to the RA axis). A single arm fork problem? I think so.

I have owned 2 of these. The scope is well made with nearly Questar level fit & finish. The scope is f15, so forget about doing deepsky with it, it's forte is lunar & planetary. The scope is just massive and so is the mahogany wood case which looks like a piece of fine furniture. Overall they are optically excellent, limited only by their small aperture. The focus mechanism uses a small rubber belt which can break after many years. There are no spare parts available since Optical Techniques folded years ago. The scope is a bit too heavy for a 4" scope, really overbuilt. This is the '56 Buick of Maksutovs.
Weighs about as much as a C8! The case is as big as a C8's also. Overall your basic 8" SCT is more versatile but can't match the Quantum's fit & finsh.
If you like jewell like quality and can live with only 4" of aperture you'll love this scope.

At the time I couldn't afford a Questar so I bought the next best thing. Turns out it is just as good! The only real problem is it's weight, but other hand it is stable. One of the few scopes I've had where the machining was done well enough to allow the setting circles to work as they should. When the machining is done correctly the axis are perpindicular and the setting circles work, when they aren't nothing works. I've done a couple of Messier Marathons with this scope and it works just as well for DSO's as it does for lunar and planetary work. A 32mm Televue gives a 1.25 deg field which make starhopping a breeze. If you get a chance to look through one of these scopes you will understand why they rarely come up for sale and when they do they get snapped up in a heartbeat.
