Orion SkyView Deluxe 4.5"
I have owned a 4.5" Sky View Deluxe for about 6 months now. For the money, it's undoubtedly the best 4.5" Newtonian I've seen. The mount is solid and stable; vibrations from focusing damp out quickly. The included eyepieces are also quite good. Optically, the tube itself is quite sharp; I have good results up to about 180x when the sky cooperates.

My only regret is that I was unable to afford the 6" version of this scope. If there is any way you can, spend the money for the larger aperture. However, if $400 is your limit, this is an excellent scope to begin exploring the sky with.

This was a first scope for me. As a learning tool it is very inexpensive and good to learn with. It works really well when looking a planetary objects eventho the color is slightly off.

Orion SkyView Deluxe 4.5"
Never having owned a telescope before we decided to purchase as beginner family scope. Everything went fine until it was time to mount the tube rings to the mount. One would not fasten tightly and the other would not even thread. Orion sent spare parts right away. So in the interim we end up using the scope with only one tube ring holding it. We were able to view Jupiter and Saturn and were very impressed with the clarity despite the wobble caused by a loose tube ring. The second night of use the declination axis worm gear started to get real sloppy and then finally stopped rotating. Called Orion and they told me to take off the piece that the holds the slow motion control shaft. Found tiny metal shavings and four of the gear teeth stripped. Rather than wait for another part to repair we decided to box it up and send it back. Optically, the scope looked great to us. Mechanically, (the eq mount) it was a major headache. Being a beginner the views it provided seemed to be a 9 or 10 to me but the problems with the mount drop it to 3 in my opinion. Customer service from Orion is a definite 10

Orion SkyView Deluxe 4.5"
optics good for price, mount stable settles in a few seconds, very easy to use. I keep it set up so great for quick looks. Takes 30 min for images to settle most nights. Good first scope to learn the ropes.
