Optical Craftsman 8" Discoverer
The main mirror in this scope has the finest figure of any newtonian I've looked through. At a recent star party I got a look through a 10" Cave, I think this 8" beats it for sharpness. Doubles to 0.7", Cassini division all around, all the classic tests this mirror has not only passed but made a mockery of them. This was my first serious telescope and I came to learn that very few amateur scopes of this type are as good. The orginal mount was a light German equatorial with motor drive--adequate at best. Originally cost $410 in 1973.

This was my first 'serious' telescope - paid $385 in 1965. Excellent optical quality - gave high contrast planetary images and sharp star images (some coma at edge of field, but that's inherent with all parabolic mirrors). German mount was light and just barely adequate.
