Celestron Celestar 8
Fair Optics, but pretty good for the price. Supplied finder is nearly worthless.

Shaky fork mount and could never see diffraction rings on the best of nights.

Celestron Celestar 8
An optically excellent example of a Schmidt-Cassegrain design, with a tripod good only for visual observing--for many, this may be all they require...

I Use this scope for Bird Watching (Bald Eagles) and Astronomy. By turning two knobs (I have the delux latitude Adjuster kit) I can make the mount an Alt-Az or and Equateral Fork Mount.

"wedge-pod makes for difficult polar alignment. Drive seem to be quite accurate. Over all a good entry level scope.

Celestron Celestar 8
This scope has the best optics for the $$. I like the no-frills,
straight-to-the-point wedgepod and the RA drive is more precise
than any other manufacturer's. The optional Astro-Computer is
very user-friendly, regardless of your knowledge of the sky.
Also, every accessory you can think of, seems to be made with the
C8 in mind. An awesome intermediate scope. I am very pleased with
mine.

Celestron Celestar 8
Great optics, lousy mount. Great for terrestrial viewing. Thinking of building a hand held mount for quick side of the road viewing. Drive is accurate. Moon viewing can't be beat.

I'd rate the Celestar 8 higher if it weren't for the small finder that comes with it. Adding a larger finder compounded my problems with dynamically balancing the scope. I eventually added a Telrad (which I love), a Dewstar and Losmandy counterweighting system which seems to have helped immensely. Even so, some minor DEC brake tension acting as a clutch is necessary.

My model has an upgraded tripod and wedge with a larger 8x50 Polaris Finder. The larger finder forced me to go with a quick release bracket by Losmandy in order to store the tube assembly in my carrying case. Setup and breakdown is quick. Optics are superb.

Celestron Celestar 8
very good optics, cheap finder, mediocre diagonal, lousy mount
in the basic version, and the computerized model is unreliable.
a good value without the computer, but you really should get the
deluxe model with better mount and finder. forget the computer
and buy a better diagonal and eyepieces instead!

Celestron Celestar 8
Nice optics especially for daytime terrestrial viewing. The basic tripod required heavy modification. I raised it 2 feet and added levelers. I also installed azimuth adjustment capability. I filed the 56" long leg pipes with small stones for stability. I also hang a bucket of joint compound from the middle. The tripod is as solid as a rock. This configuration really cuts down on the vibrations. The optics are too dark for deep sky viewing in the city. The drive tracks great. The dec wheel needs modification next. I replaced the finder scope with a rifle scope. I also installed a Telrad, which is a neat device. Great scope for low power viewing. This is a great "first scope".

Celestron Celestar 8
Great optics, very cute RA motor-going and absolutely portable.
But the default 6x30 finder is thought quite small for star-hopping, and altitude adjusting is so difficult for its weight of OTA & forked arm in order to align polar-axis. It could be the most marvelous equipment when one run on AAM(Advanced Astro Master) with it.
In short words, SUPERB EFFICIENCY!

Celestron Celestar 8
Optics are absolutely first rate! Image shift is minimal compared to other makes I have used. The Wedgepod could have been height adjustable for only a little more money (I would have paid a little more for this!) The diagonal is marginal. I replaced mine with a Lumicon and what a difference! If they had not included 2nd rate accessories like the diagonal and finder, I would rate it a ten!

Celestron Celestar 8
Great optics, simple and sturdy for my use. I knew the finder would be replaced with a Telrad. After viewing other 8" SCT's I'm extremely pleased with my choice. Super value.

Celestron Celestar 8
A good scope overall. The wedgepod is far too short to be useful. I upgraded to an adjustable heavy duty tripod and wedge, and added an 8x50 finder scope. I'd like to have an LX200, but for the price difference am very happy with the Celestar 8.

I RECENTLY PURCHASED A CELESTAR 8. I HAVE BEEN IMPRESSED WITH THE OPTICAL
QUALITY ALL AROUND. THE MOUNT IS FAIRLY STABLE, BUT A BIT SHAKY AT HIGH
MAGNIFICATION (ESPECIALLY ON PLANETS). THE MOTOR DRIVE IS VERY ACCURATE AND
ALIGNING ISNT TOO TIME CONSUMING. FOR THE MONEY I BELIEVE IT IS A GOOD CHOICE
FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO GET INTO DEEP SPACE WITHOUT GOING INTO DEEP DEBT.

Celestron Celestar 8
Great optics, finder is too small. Plan to upgrade the finder soon. I've found this for $1,000 in local stores. Tracking worked well, with easy polar alignment (for casual viewing).

Celestron Celestar 8
shaky mount. Good for terrestrial and moon viewing. Good scope for
beginners, though may be a bit bulky for some people. Nonetheless, a good
scope for the money. Never used scope that came with it, just used a
telrad.
