Technics SA-DX940
Excellent buy for the money. I believe this is an updated 930 and yes, it still generates a lot of heat. I have only had it one week. Bought it from Egghead for less than $180 New. Outstantding sound quality, good features, and easy to use. The DSP functions (especially Theater) sound great. I would not risk putting this in an enclosure however where there may be restriction to air flow. It would be nice to have S-Video switching but when watching DVDs I want to go direct (S-Video) into the TV anyway. I am not an expert but I would not hesitate to purchase again.

I found this unit to preform very well. Exc. audio quality and very easy to use . Get no distortion. Bulit in decoder is very slick.

Contrary to popular beleif and sequential numbering, the 940 is NOT an updated 930, the fact is that it does NOT have the TA-KE high end capacitors, the 940 is a downgraded mass market version of the 930

I haven't explored all of the performance parameters of the SA-DX940 as I have only just bought it ($349 CDN in Toronto), but it is far better than the old Kenwood Dolby Surround receiver that it replaced. My system consists of Bose AM-7 Accoustimass (fronts), Bose AM-5 (rears), and an Energy AS-90 powered sub-woofer. Sorce components are a Sony hi-fi VCR and a Toshiba SD-3109 DVD player.
, and my TV is a 27" Panasonic GAOO flatscreen with component video inputs. Having watched "The Matrix", "Apocalypse Now", and "Mystery Men" I was blown away by the clarity and power of the sound pumped out by this receiver. It was bought as a cheap stop-gap measure until the whole Dolby 5.1/6.1/7.1 bun fight is resolved. I didn't want to pay $1600 CDN for a Denon AVR-3300, only to have it become obsolete within a few months. So I was very impressed with the effortless high volumes that this receiver is capable of. It's a keeper, I love it. A light on the volume knob would be nice, though.

I read about the heat complaints on this and decided to buy it anyway. It replaces my Technics SA-EX700, which is a fine receiver. The SA-DX90 does get really hot, much hotter than my EX700, so I think I will buy a extra cooling fan.
Other than heat I like the remote, universal, works my TV-VCR. The digital surround is a big improvement over pro-logic. The price is unbeatable.

I purchased the 940 to replace my old Technics system. I have very displeased with the unit. I have had nothing but trouble from the start. My entire system is Technics and this is the only componet I consistantly have trouble with. The heat put off from this unit is extremely high. When it is operating it performs wonderfully. The help button should be updated to detect all malfunctions. My system has several problems and the help button has never produced an answer form me.

Ive had the chance to hear many, many sound system this year, like McIntosh, crown, Marantz (all stereo) / kenwood (dont remember the model, the last one, Silver like) , H/K (AC3) ... and for the DTS/5.1 , Technics beats up the Kenwood and H/K.... Stereo mode is real powerfull too. I recommend the 940. Didnt really found any heat problems on it. when on peak volume, it gets almost cold , cuz of the fan in the back.

This SA-DX940 is a great system... very outstanding sound and has 2 decoders : Dolby Digital and DTS. It is really marvellous with very good speaker systems... It's true that it gives off heat, but no problem if placed elsewhere than in a TV cabinet or so... I love it ! No problem with it at all... as good as a Denon which is a lot more expensive... The sound is even brighter and the stereophonic image as good. Use very good speaker cables and a very good subwoofer cavle... OEHLBACH cables are perfect with this unit !

I bought a technics SA-DX940 for £320 this seems to be quite pricy compared with what everybody else paid in the states. It did come with 5 technics SB-AFC140 speakers and an ELTAX SW20 Active Sub. The price I paid was very reasonable considering I have seen them for £500+. I found it very easy to use and set up and overall very happy with it, and yes it does run vey hot.

Working @ Radioshack (canada) I have used the 940 & 950 models both everyday. And the way that this thing gets pushed, It's the powerhouse of our entertainment sections. They get rigged up with all sorts of gadgets, to help demonstrate the various items in store. With the aid of SWITCH BOXES, I have seen up to 5 vcrs, 5 DVD players, a pair of cd players and tape decks and a ton of speakers connected to both models. I have noticed that the 940 does get a little warm after about 3 hours of continous high power usage. The cooling fan in it helps some, but I hooked up a cooling fan for it. When we started using the 950 under the same conditions, the heat problems were pretty much rectified by technics. On both systems though the sound quality is the best that I've heard yet. They are both definate good buys for home use. They kill RCA, Pioneer, Harmon Kardon, Sony and JVC models.

had it for 5 years, no problems at all. I've used it in a cabinet as well as on an open shelf. Never had heating problems. If you are having heating problems it is probably because of stacking.
