The above post is correct. John is a vicious predator. He tells outright lies to customers, backs out of deals whenever it suits him, and fails to take any responsibility for living up to his part of the deal. I purchased several items from him for well over $1,000, which have so far failed to arrive, and when I've questioned him about the status of the order, he simply heaps on abuse about never wanting to deal with me again. Too late, I've found similar stories about this creature on SAA. I'm glad I used postal money orders rather than the direct bank transfer which he insisted on. At least this way I'll be able to involve the postal inspectors in a mail fraud investigation if my purchase doesn't arrive.

My strong recommendation: DON'T EVER DO BUSINESS WITH JOHN NIEMI.

I have only had excellent dealings with John Neimi. I have purchased well over $3000.00 of telescopes and eyepieces by direct bank transfer and by money order. I have always recieved the itens ordered in excellent or brand new condition,.

I have read the above comments and it interests me that no one will post their name to their comments. The post mentioning that one of the above posts is suspect seems to just be another flame attemt.

I deal quite a bit on Astromart and other places so am very familiar with many of these buyers. Not every buyer can be made happy no matter what is offered. Do not base your opinions of John on unvalidated claims whether good or bad.

In the Fall of 2000 I bought an excellent Takahashi FC100N from John using direct wire transfer. The scope arrived in 7 days including a holiday weekend and sitting in customs over that weekend. The scope was exactly as advertised and an excellent value. I have recently bought an FS102 from John using Postal Money Orders and again no problems.

John may not be everyones cup of tea in the way he comunicates but we all have our quirks. I tend to be an overly accomodating seller but still manage to piss people off occasionally too. Dealing with John is simple. Ask all questions up front and do be ready to buy when you ask those questions. He makes that very clear on his site. If that is not how you like to do business maybe he is not for you but I have always been treated fairly and with prompt answers from him. As for slow shipping remember that U.S. Customs plays a big role is the time your item takes to arrive. John offers good prices on many of the items and in my opinion far better service than many of the big New York mail order camera/telescope suppliers.

Anyway, that's my two cents worth and I would be glad to talk privately if those doubters question my positive response.

Gentlemen,

I agree with Tony Miller above. I have done business with John Niemi numerous times and have had nothing but good experiences. The equipment is always meticulously and accurately described. He is not a store, but a fellow enthusiast and all the eccentricity that implies.

Some of the negative postings appear to be multiples from the same addresses without names. I can only speak to my, and a friend's experiences, but I am sympathetic with the nervousness of sending money overseas. I have had an order held up in Customs myself.

People should be willing to state their names. I am willing to answer any questions people may have.

Con artist? I think the only con artist here is the person posting twice as someone different. Look at the above posts that are negative and look at the BY: line. Interesting that they are from the same internet connection in a row. Huh, two different people giving ratings from the same computer at the same time. What did they do, have a anti-Niemi meeting and all decide to post from one computer? Get real, I am considering buying from this guy and that is not helping me or your fellow astronomers make any sound decisions.

As of August 2001 I have had a successful transaction with John Neimi in which I bought a rare eyepiece from him and was very happy with its condition and the time it took for the shipment to arrive. I sent the postal money order through Global Priority and had him ship it EMS insured to me; total transit time: two weeks. It was very decently packed and exactly as described. It was obvious that it had either never been dirty or was thoroughly cleaned before being shipped. John's demeanor is of precision and sometimes impatience, but I can relate to that and would not hesitate to buy from him again (if he could just find me a 10mm Widescan !!)

I bought an older Tak EM-1 mount from John. Not only did he give me a good price, the mount was well-packed and arrived in excellent condition. Others have posted some very negative comments, but my impression of John Niemi is that he is very serious and honest. I would buy from him again with no reservations.

I just purchased a TAK Sky 90 from John. It arrived in excellent condition. The packing job was better than I ever experienced from any mail order house. He was easy to do business with and answered all my questions promptly. John delivered everything he promised and more at an excellent price.

I have purchased scopes, a mount and lenses from John in the past and would not hesitate from buying again. He was very accurate in describing the merchandise,prompt in responding to e-mails, and did meticulus packing. The average time from sending International Postal Money Orders via Global priority Air Mail until delivery to my front door via Ems was only 10 days. John posted comments about some buyers on his web page, " the rest of the story?" The prices I paid for my purchases were well below comprable items on the internet, even when cost of money orders and shipping is included.

I have purchased 2 refractors from John Niemi, the first was a Pentax 105 ED and the 2nd just received today is a Takahashi Fs128. Both times I received great communications from John and the scopes arrived very well packed and within 5 days after John received my wired funds. I cannot speak for other but as for myself, John Niemi has been nothing short of superb during both of my transactions with him. The Pentax was for $1,700 and the new FS128 was for $3,500. No problems what so ever, both scopes were as advertised and both looked new. I would not hesitate to order a scope from John for twice these amounts if he had something on his website that I wanted to purchase. John is very honest (with me) and I have received two fine instruments at a very nice savings by purchasing them from John. cwellman@satx.rr.com
