Sony STR-DA30ES
I have not had it very long, but for the time I have it sounds great. The sound is clean, as is it's appearance. Very well built. Weight is 30 lbs, heavy but not as heavy as I would have expected. I like most of the surround DSP's and DD is great. Can't test DTS since there are no DVD's out yet. The only flaw I see with it is that it does not have 6 channel input. Oh well, at the price of the unit, I'll end up buying something new in 5 years anyway.

Question for 50ES/30ES owners. Does this unit remember set-up parameters when switching between inputs? Previous ES recievers did not do this, and I was curious to see if Sony fixed the problem.

To the last person, yes it does retain the setting for each function independently. This is helpful if you switch often like I do. From what I understand, this was a nice change for the 30/50ES that the 80/90 did not have.

Sony STR-DA30ES
I got this unit for $540.00 shipped, at that price it cannot be touched. In fact I would have paid $650.00 or more for this puppy. Great sound although 29 sounds fields might be a little overkill, but you can tweak them all to your preferance and some of them work quite nicely. Check out www.oade.com for this price. I did have to wait awhile to get the unit, but it arrived in perfect condition with a 5 year Sony warranty.

Sony STR-DA30ES
To the last reviewer, please answer the following:
Where did you find this receiver at $540.00 (including shipping)?
Was the receiver in the original factory packaging, with everything included?
Was it "factory new"?
...and, how do you like it as of now?

Sony STR-DA30ES
I'm Very very happy with the Sony str-da30es for $600.00 buck with shipping is worth every cent. I could have it for $50 bucks cheaper, But the waiting list for the Sony 30es and the 50es was to long. Anyways the sound is clean and clear
and powerful. I gave it a rating of 9 because the remote is not set-up right. In other words the LCD display thing have to go and the manual is not stright forward.I bought 2 of the Sony Receiver sta-30es 1 for me and the other for my bother and we both agreed that the remote has a learning curve.but the sound is awesome.

Can any STR DA30ES owners tell me if you can mix S & composite video? Supposedly Yamaha 995 cannot. It's either or...

Most receivers DO NOT convert between S-Video and composite. Some AV shops sell a device to do this, but they go for around $80

Love the sound, power, features, etc.... but is anyone else
having problems with the remote toggle? I've had problems
with 3 of them. More importantly, does anyone know of a fix
for this recurring problem?

Sony STR-DA30ES
This unit is great. Sony out did themselves on this unit. DTS decoder, Dolby Digital. I have JBL speakers and a Sony DVD player. I am very happy with this unit. I had a harman kardon receiver before this - and switched last week. You can not compare the two units. Sony is the one and only for me. $679.00 at www.sounddistributors.com

So far I like this receiver and the remote, however, I'll reserve rating it unitl I test the DTS function. Someone has sent E-Mail to me saying that they have tried A DTS DVD and it does not work - can anyone verify that the 30ES has a DTS decoder as advertised???

This person has also talked to 3 people at Sony trying to straighten out all the confusion - all 3 Sony spokepersons said that the 30ES does not have a DTS decoder???

I sure hope it has DTS. I ordered one two weeks ago, but it's still on back order. (The 30 and 50 are both really popular right now can't get them anywhere)
The Canadian and US Sony web sites both say it has DTS.

Sony STR-DA30ES
Finally received a couple of DTS DVDs from Amazon.com and they sound just fine. The 30ES does indeed decode DTS.

The 30ES performs very well on Dolby Digital and DTS 5 channel sound. Music is vastly superior to my old JVC pro-logic receiver. Imaging and soundstage are more than acceptable. There are an abundance of input and outputs for both audio (incl digital) and video. I'm driving Infinity OV-1s which perform very well (bottom & top) with this receiver - hmmm, sure would like a sub woofer for that LFE channel tho... Setup is a little disconcerting at first, but once you have deciphered Sony's manual it's not too bad.

The remote works well and I've had no problem with the reportedly troublesome toggle. The remote could control my other components a little better. It does just OK on most, but will not control my Dish Network Satellite receiver.

For the price, the 30ES delivers everything I expected and then some. I'll knock off 1 pt. for lack of 5 channel inputs and the tad bright (but not fatiguing) sound.

Sony STR-DA30ES
We (my wife & I) bought the 30ES about a month ago. The remote seemed to have the problem of the LCD cutting out the first day we hooked it up (such as has been previously reported). However, I took the batteries out, put new ones in and it hasn't done it again, since. We really like this receiver! I replaced a 10 year old "top of the line" (at the time) Pioneer, which gave us GREAT service for all those years. But, this Sony seems to be a lot nicer. More goodies. Great sound. This turned out to be a good move for us, especially since we were wanting to upgrade to AC-3 and DTS. We rated this a "10" as we haven't found anything wrong with the receiver. If the remote repeats the LCD blackout problem, I'll re-rate this to a lower number!

Sony STR-DA30ES
We bought the 30ES a couple of months ago when we finished our home theater. Love the sound. But I tried it a few days ago with a DTS version of an Apollo 13 DVD and it didn't seem to work in DTS mode. The DTS light on the front panel never came on either. Anyone else have experience with DTS DVDs?

Sony STR-DA30ES
I went through a first 30ES that developed an intermittant humm after about a week of use. The Humm went away when the unit warmed up. It was weird and I noticed that the reciever got real hot in my cabinet, I gave it very little clearance.

I called Oade and they sent me a new replacement, no problem. I probably got one of the last 30's. The new unit has been flawless. I also gave it more clearance and it isn't as hot now.

I love the sound and I hooked it up to the Solid Solutions home theatre system. I am happy with it, but can't give it a 10 due to the initial problem.

I like the remote and am getting used to it.

DTS Does Not work on mine either.
I bought Dances with Wolves DVD (DTS VERSION)
It only works in Pro logic mode.
I'm using Co-axial cable too!

Aside from False advertising I love this receiver.

Sony STR-DA30ES
A wonderful reciever. The sound can be a little too crisp at times, but performs very well. If you don't have a sub, get one because the LFE function is a wonderful thing to have. For those that are having trouble with getting the DTS to function with DVD's check which audio setting the DVD player is on (many DVD's come with multiple English tracks, some of which are Pro Logic and others DTS).

Sony STR-DA30ES
The sound for CDs and Radio out of the STR-DA30ES is quite good. I'm happy with it driving a set of Boston speaker. The volume can be cranks and its not bad for 80 Watts per channel. The remote seems to work fine. What I am completely upset about is its inability to decode DTS! I just bought Saving Private Ryan for DTS and it doesn't decode at all! I just purchased Apollo 13 and we'll have to see. I'm driving it with a Panasonic A110 DVD. The main reason I bought this receiver was to decode DTS and now I'm unfortunately not able too. I did check the language setting and there is none for Saving Private Ryan. BEWARE! If anyone has any info, please email me at thad@galileoT.com. Thanks.
