Can someone who owns one of these units please give a plus/minus comparison? I'm looking heavily into this receiver, and i want some "real" input before i buy.

Hello,

I'm about to go get my third one.
The first one I purchased "open box". Granted that was stupid, but the store was out of new ones. The rear right channel speaker output was deffective. I returned that one and got a brand new one, got it home and couldnt get any sound output -- from ANY of the speakers even in tuner mode.

I figure third time is the charm. The unit has all the features im looking for, and most of the stores in the Bay Area cant keep it on the selves. The remote is great and the unit has lots of great features... the price is nice as well.

The price/feature is very good (got mine for less than $400). The main disappoinment that I had was the remote, it looks cool but that's it, it has limited control on the receiver and lots of trouble controlling non-sony products. The unit itself gets very hot, it doesn't have any fan so you don't want to put anything on top of it. Aside from those complaints the unit is pretty good for the price.

While the receiver sounds and works very well, there are 2 drawbacks that I have :
1- Lack of a cooling fan to keep a constant airflow.
2- The VERY disappointing remote control is not nearly as convenient to use as it is good looking. It won't control my Rca CD or VCR, and won't work with DISH network receiver. It is very complicated to use more than the simple volume and channel controls as you have to select a sub menu. And you shoould be able to disable TV volume in order to keep it at a steady volume and use main volume control.

I like the receiver and may have to go out and spend another $100 or so to get a quality remote to control the rest of my equipment.

I am very pleased with this receiver. I find the acoustic parameters settings
to be useful, but nothing substitutes for adjusting with what you usually listen
to. The remote is too complex and slow.

Pros: lots of adjustments, virtual surround fields, and
it really like the way it sounds
Cons: the remote is very slow and it won't control my
digital cable box
The unit runs pretty warm, but active cooling would be noisy.
Just don't put anything on top of it.

I've had this receiver for over a month now and have been very satisfied with every feature, except the remote. It has lots of inputs and outputs, which can be extremely useful with a complex system. I've heard no distortion at any volume, and each of the five speaker outputs can be individual calibrated. In fact, calibrating this system with the Ultimate DVD Platinum proved to be very easy. But, as many others have reported, the two-way remote is slow and has a very steep learning curve. I paid $374 "open box" in Best Buy, but lucked out because only the remote had been touched. (Another customer just brought her remote in because she couldn't get it to work and the salesman opened a new box to show her the new remote worked the same way!) (Except for the remote, I would have rated it a '10'.) By the way, the DTS output sounds phenomenal.

I have had this unit for 6 months now, and am very unhappy. The unit lacks an S-Video input on the TV/SAT position - not good. In 2-CH Stereo mode I still get audio from the center speakers - not good. I can't get Sony to tell me what the crossover frequency is on the sub-woofer output when playing a non-Dolby Digital source. The Sub-woofer output turns off during playback of a 2-CH audio source. The input mode does not select between optical and analog like it should. And finally, how can you get 5-CHs @ 110 Watts each and only consume 290 Watts total???

i have owned this sony for 8 months and think it was a good value for what i got. (paid $450 new) does have some major drawbacks though:

1) remote. ridulous. painfully slow and difficult to use. wont control my sat. dish or my vcr.

2) no s-video input for my sat. dish, ended up hooking it up to the video-2 inputinstead.

3) im not sure how they rated this at 110x5, but i dont seem to "feel" the wattage they say it has.

again, though, for $450 i still think it is a great deal.

I purchased this unit 3 months ago I like this receiver I did not do a great deal of reserch on the different brands but for the price $369 new in box I feel
I got more than I paid for cosidering the prices on other name brand products
I also think that this product is not going to become obsolete very quickly due to the fact that DTS is hardly being encoded in any dvd's at all as of yet and
that was one of the considerations when I bought the item overall very happy
I dont like the remote at all and to replace it if it should break I was quoted
$200 ouch! it does need a fan I use mine almost non-stop so i did purchase the service aggrement from circut city for an additional $69 5 yrs parts and labor included.I do expect overheating to cause some problems I am very happy with this unit other than those few items. sounds great looks great.

I purchased this unit a week or two ago, and am planning on returning it. The reciever started 60-cycling after about 2 hours of use, and if you are going to pay money for something like this, it should work properly. The lack of s-video inputs is a downfall, the remote is impossible to use, the two-way remote system slows down the remote's response and actions by an exponential facto (despite the fact that the two-way feature is defeatable), the power is iffy, and the digital inputs are not selectable. on the plus side, i like the digital signal processing and its soundfields. 5CH stereo would be nice to have, tho.

I love it. It's a smooth performer and it was not difficult to learn how to operate. The remote is what scared me but after later using other remotes similar it's not a hard one. Sound is great, funcinality is excellent.

I bought this in march 2000-Brand new from costco.com for $329+12 shipping-I wish I would have bought 4 or 5. I have had now problems at all & it drives 5 full range speakers at big volume with no problem.I run this amp HARD for at least an hour a day & will not upgrade until I can afford 2 3channel Earth quake amps priced @ $1600 each!
