Meade Ultra Wide Angle 14mm
This eyepiece has been around awhile, and will be around for a long time to
come. It's one of the best wide fields out there. Well corrected in everyway.
It is heavy, but feels like you got something, A heck of an eyepiece.
You may have to rebalance your dob. The eye reliefs not bad if you don't
wear glasses. The field is huge and sharpe to the edge in any scope.
It makes it hard to look through A 67Deg. field again, So you have been
forwarned. Looking through A pentax or lesser field is like looking
through a pipe. You can say smaller fields are ok. Your happy with
your pipe. You don't need that huge sharp field. NOT!
Your in denial. It's sour grapes. If you have a big Dob it is a must.

Meade Ultra Wide Angle 14mm
This is a supurb eyepiece. So far, I've used it in a 4" achro, a 4" apo, and a 20" dob with great success. The views are sharp, bright, and clear to the edge of the 84 degree field. It's absolutely wonderful on open clusters with a 4" scope. Unlike a previous post, I find this eyepiece most comfortable with the eyecup up--it helps to keep your head steady and at the correct distance. This has become my defalut eyepiece. My only complaint is that it doesn't perform as well as I'd like on really bright objects in a 4" achromat, i.e. Sirius, Jupiter, etc. The purple halo is more evident than in simpler designs such as plossls and orthos. Since this only occurs on about a 1/2 dozen objects, it's not really a limitation. However, it did keep me from giving the eyepiece a 10.

Best 14mm ep made. Easily beats the Pentax 14, the 12 and 13 Nags, and the 14 Radian. Get one. You won't be sorry and the price is right.

From a rating above:
"You really have to know quality to rate an eyepiece" - what absolute tosh!!!

There's room enough in this world for more than one good eyepiece, but I've got both the Meade 14mm UWA AND the Pentax 14mm and in my opinion after many hours of observing with them both, the Pentax has only one advantage and that is eye relief.
The UWA has a much wider field which is significantly sharper across the whole field whereas the Pentax goes softer at the edges especially in faster scopes, ZERO lateral colour unlike the Pentax and contrast is as just as good.
For someone to state the line above to me suggests that they really have never used one of these eyepieces and are simply choosing to "attack the competition". Sorry mate, but it won't wash as too many other people have looked through these and have acknowledged the quality, as is evident by the number of 10s it gets.

I accept that others may have a preference for the Pentax for reasons of eye relief, and fair play to them as that's the reason I keep this Pentax as well as my UWA and why I also prefer Radians to Orthos, but compromising doesn't make the Pentax EPs better, and to rate this eyepiece at 5 out of 10 is simply laughable.

"To The Above Post"

Amen! Well said and even tho this page is for "ratings" and not basic discussion or arguing etc., I completely agree with your post. This person has either never taken the time to really "look" thru the 14mm UWA or they are, as you say, just competition bashing. This is my most used eyepiece out of several excellent eyepieces that I own. For all around enjoyment at mid-power level viewing, it is wonderful to have. I "don't leave home without it!"

"Horses for courses". I don't want to jump on any bandwagons here, but I do believe that reviewers should stick to just that....reviewing! There's no doubt that this is a superb eyepiece, but so are the Pentax, Vixen, etc. near-equivalents,and it's truly a case of each to his own. As much as I like this Meade, I tend to prefer the Pentax purely because it has better eye-relief for glasses-wearers like myself. THAT DOESN'T MEAN THAT THERE'S ANYTHING WRONG WITH THE MEADE! QUITE THE CONTRARY! In 38 years of observing, I have seen some huge improvements in optics become available to the layman, so perhaps a few of these highly critical reviewers should drag out and retry some of their 60's & 70's Kellners, then they might be thankful for the fabulous options we have now. All manufacturers let a few lemons slip through. I'm sure that many users have come across them from time to time,(I know I have!) but on the whole, we're blessed! This Meade is a first-class piece of work, and don't let anybody tell you otherwise!

Meade Ultra Wide Angle 14mm
This is the eyepiece I almost always reach for when observing with my 18" Obsession and I have Nagler's and Panoptics in my EP case, that's how good it is! Just right eye relieve, great contrast, sharp to the edge of the huge field with good light transmission. Do yourself a favor if your considering a Nagler in this focal length range, get one of these, you won't be disappointed!

Meade Ultra Wide Angle 14mm
Virtually identical performance between Meade, Pentax and Radian. Meade will give a better FOV, Pentax and Radian give better usability due to eye relief. Pick the EP that fits your needs and budget. All three are great and deserve 10's

Meade Ultra Wide Angle 14mm
Hi all,

I have to say that the Meade 14mm UWA, that I bought used on Astromart, is a wonderful ocular! The performance, from on axis to the very edge, has to be seen to believed. Yes, the eye relief it provides isn't as great as some of its "competitors", but eye relief has never been a major issue with me. I've always been able to adjust. ;^)

The Meade performs flawlessly in my Vixen 102FL, TEC 6" mak, Quantum 4, and I'll check to see how it works with my newly arrived Vixen 80FL. I know I'm not in for any unpleasant surprises.

Best regards,
Bill

Meade Ultra Wide Angle 14mm
It's heavy, really heavy. And big. I had to re balance my 8 inch F6 dob while using it. It is worth it. the space walk feel of the 80+ degree field is incredible. Images are bright and crisp to the edge. No noticable kidney beaning. nice eye relief. Would like to compare one on one with a Nagler 12mm. I was able to get a good deal from a local museum for this eye piece along with is littlew brother the 8.8mm. If you can afford this so called glass hand grenade you will not be dissapointed with the results.

Meade Ultra Wide Angle 14mm
This is my favorite eyepiece for my 8" F6 dob. I did do some rebalancing to accomodate this eyepiece but it's well worth the effort. Great contrast and sharp to the edge. Eyerelief is just right. The views you get with this big eyepiece are stunning. Used a 3X Antaries barlow on Saturn with surprisingly good results. This eyepiece is in a great focal range and is very easy to use. Highly recommended.

IT,s the best wide filed eyepiece i have ever had and it was very many. In my 10f/9 scope the stars are pinpointed to the edge of the 84 FOV? The eye relief is ok and there is NO color or coma or ghosting in this heavy eyepiece. Truely amazing for an 8 element eyepiece. telescope8@hotmail.com

The best eyepiece I own and I have a 31 Nagler. This eyepiece offers great deep sky views but also is fantastic for planetary observing with its sharp optics. For the money (especially on the used market, discounted), it's a steal.
